Solar power is entering a new phase as Chinese-made photovoltaic panels reach prices of roughly $0.12 per watt, transforming the economics of rooftop and distributed generation. The collapse in module costs is helping homes, factories and businesses install solar capacity at a faster pace, while also creating new challenges for electricity grids and traditional utilities.

Panel Prices Have Changed the Economics of Solar

The decline in solar-module prices has been extraordinary. Chinese panels that cost roughly $5–$6 per watt around the turn of the millennium now cost only about $0.12 per watt in 2026. Years of manufacturing expansion and intense competition among Chinese producers have pushed module costs dramatically lower, making solar increasingly accessible in markets where electricity prices or grid reliability provide a strong incentive for self-generation.

The impact is visible across commercial and industrial users. Pakistan’s Bestway Cement, for example, has installed solar generation at its production facilities and has cut electricity costs by as much as 40%. The same economics are increasingly reaching households and smaller businesses, expanding solar beyond large utility-scale projects.

Rooftop Solar Is Expanding Across Global Markets

Emerging markets are becoming an important driver of the next stage of solar growth. India is adding solar capacity at record levels, while rooftop solar capacity in the Philippines has nearly doubled in a year. Africa is also heading toward a record year, with installations expected to reach 17 gigawatts in 2026.

Developed markets are seeing the same structural shift. Australia now has solar panels installed on more than 4.3 million properties, while simplified plug-and-play systems are gaining traction across Europe. The broader expansion reflects a move from centralized electricity generation toward increasingly distributed power production located closer to consumers.

Cheap Solar Creates a New Challenge for Electricity Grids

The rapid growth of rooftop generation is not an unqualified benefit for traditional electricity systems. Existing grids were largely designed for one-way flows from large power stations to customers. As households and businesses generate electricity themselves and send excess power back into the network, utilities face more complex flows, forecasting challenges and pressure on traditional revenue models.

Voltage instability and lower utilization of conventional grid infrastructure could become more significant as distributed solar penetration rises. In some markets, wealthier consumers can reduce their reliance on utilities while lower-income households remain dependent on the grid and continue to share the cost of maintaining it. Policymakers are therefore increasingly examining subsidies, grid rules and electricity pricing structures alongside solar deployment.

The next phase of the solar market will depend not only on how low panel prices can fall, but also on whether grids can adapt to rapidly growing distributed generation. Battery storage, AI-based forecasting, smart tariffs and upgraded transmission infrastructure are likely to become increasingly important. For investors and energy companies, the falling cost of solar creates opportunities across the clean-energy supply chain while simultaneously forcing utilities to reconsider how electricity is generated, transmitted and priced in a more decentralized market.
