Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang received a phone call from Donald Trump during his appearance at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles and put the president on speakerphone in front of the audience. The exchange highlighted a growing divide between technology leaders warning about the risks of rapidly advancing AI and industry figures such as Huang and Trump, who argue that excessive caution could undermine U.S. technological leadership.

Trump and Huang Push Back Against AI Pessimism

During the roughly five-minute conversation, Trump dismissed concerns about existential risks from AI and described the latest wave of warnings as a “hoax.” He argued that “the robots are not going to take over the world” and suggested that calls to slow AI development could ultimately benefit China by weakening America’s position in the global technology race.

Huang broadly aligned with Trump’s position but took a more nuanced approach to safety concerns. He said whistleblower warnings should be taken seriously while rejecting extreme predictions that AI could lead to the end of humanity. Huang argued that such scenarios lack a scientific basis and that the focus should remain on developing the technology while addressing legitimate risks.

The Debate Comes as Chip Stocks Face Pressure

The debate has direct implications for financial markets. Nvidia has become the central supplier of the advanced chips and computing infrastructure powering the AI investment cycle. In its fiscal second quarter of 2027, the company reported revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% from a year earlier, while Data Center revenue surged 117% to $89 billion. Nvidia also projected revenue of approximately $108 billion for its fiscal third quarter.

A slowdown in AI model development could therefore have implications far beyond software companies. It could affect spending on data centers, advanced computing systems and semiconductors across the technology sector. On September 14, the PHLX Semiconductor Index fell 5.9%, while Nvidia shares declined about 3.4%, reflecting broader concerns over the pace and sustainability of AI-related capital spending.

AI Safety Is Becoming an Economic Question

Huang’s comments come as the debate over AI safety becomes increasingly prominent among industry executives. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for greater caution around the development of advanced AI systems, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also supported stronger safeguards and standards. Huang, however, has repeatedly argued that extreme fears surrounding AI should not dictate public policy, warning that excessive restrictions could discourage companies from adopting the technology.

For Nvidia, the debate also has a significant business dimension. The company has become one of the world’s most valuable corporations, with a market capitalization above $5 trillion, leaving investor expectations highly dependent on continued growth in AI infrastructure spending. Any meaningful change in demand, regulation or development timelines could therefore have a substantial impact on technology valuations.

Going forward, investors will be watching more than Nvidia’s chip sales. Regulatory developments, AI infrastructure spending and the positions of leading model developers will increasingly shape the outlook. The key question is whether concerns over AI risks eventually slow investment, or instead redirect spending toward safety, cybersecurity and infrastructure designed to support continued AI development at scale.
