Key Points
- Eli Lilly says Foundayo has captured more than 30% of new U.S. patients starting oral obesity treatments.
- The result narrows Novo Nordisk’s early lead, with its Wegovy pill previously estimated to hold about 90% of the oral market.
- Oral GLP-1 drugs could become a major growth segment as patients seek alternatives to injectable treatments.
Eli Lilly is rapidly gaining ground in the emerging U.S. market for oral weight-loss medicines, saying its Foundayo pill has captured more than 30% of new patients starting oral obesity treatments. The development highlights intensifying competition with Novo Nordisk and the broader shift toward easier-to-administer GLP-1 therapies, a market analysts expect to expand significantly over the coming years.
Foundayo Is Closing the Gap With Wegovy
Foundayo, also known as orforglipron, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2026 and launched nationally shortly afterward. Lilly says the once-daily pill has now secured more than 30% of new U.S. patients entering the oral obesity-treatment market, marking a rapid increase in share since its launch.
The figure is particularly significant because Novo Nordisk entered the oral market earlier with its Wegovy pill and had established a substantial lead. Novo Chief Executive Mike Doustdar said in August that Wegovy accounted for roughly 90% of the U.S. oral obesity market at that point. Lilly’s latest figure therefore suggests that competition is developing faster than the early market structure implied.
Why Oral GLP-1 Drugs Matter for the Weight-Loss Market
The expansion of oral treatments could broaden the addressable market beyond patients already willing to use injections. Foundayo is designed as a once-daily pill that can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions, addressing some of the practical considerations associated with oral and injectable weight-loss therapies. Lilly launched the treatment at a self-pay price starting at $149 per month, while eligible commercially insured patients can pay as little as $25 per month through its savings program.
Access is also expanding through government coverage. Under Lilly’s Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, eligible Medicare Part D patients can access Foundayo for weight management, with the program beginning in July 2026. Broader insurance coverage could become an important factor in determining how quickly oral treatments translate into sustained prescription growth.
A Market That Could Exceed $100 Billion
The competitive stakes extend well beyond the current market-share figures. Novo Nordisk has said it expects oral medicines to account for more than one-third of GLP-1-based obesity treatment use by 2030, while analysts expect the U.S. obesity-treatment market to exceed $100 billion in annual value by then. The transition toward pills could therefore reshape both the competitive balance between Lilly and Novo Nordisk and the overall economics of obesity treatment.
For Lilly, Foundayo also provides another growth avenue alongside its injectable Zepbound franchise. The company’s ability to convert initial patient adoption into sustained prescriptions will depend on pricing, insurance coverage, manufacturing capacity and clinical differentiation as additional oral treatments enter the market.
The next phase of competition will likely focus on whether Foundayo can continue gaining share as Novo expands access to Wegovy and other pharmaceutical companies advance their own oral obesity programs. Prescription retention, reimbursement trends and the pace at which oral drugs expand the overall treatment population will be key indicators of whether the current shift represents a temporary launch effect or the beginning of a structural change in the global obesity-drug market.
