Oracle has delivered another strong signal that artificial intelligence is reshaping the global cloud-computing market, with accelerating infrastructure revenue helping drive a sharp rise in its stock. The results provide fresh evidence that demand for AI training and inference is translating into significant commercial growth for cloud providers, even as investors remain focused on the enormous capital requirements needed to build the infrastructure.
AI Infrastructure Drives Oracle’s Growth
Oracle reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $19.3 billion, an increase of 30% from a year earlier and a record for the company. Adjusted earnings per share reached $1.92, up 30% year over year and above market expectations.
The strongest growth came from the cloud business. Total cloud revenue increased 62% to $11.6 billion, while Cloud Infrastructure, or IaaS, revenue jumped 121% to $7.4 billion. Cloud Applications revenue increased 10% to $4.2 billion.
The figures underline the growing importance of AI workloads to Oracle’s business. Companies developing and operating increasingly sophisticated AI models require large amounts of computing capacity, creating an expanding market for Oracle’s infrastructure services.
$664 Billion Backlog Highlights AI Demand
Oracle’s remaining performance obligations, a measure of contracted revenue that has yet to be recognized, reached a record $664 billion. The figure increased by $209 billion from a year earlier, reflecting the scale of new cloud commitments.
Oracle secured more than $30 billion in new AI cloud contracts during the quarter. An important feature of these agreements is that many customers are helping finance the required infrastructure through prepayments or by supplying their own GPUs, reducing the amount of capital Oracle needs to fund the expansion itself.
That structure is particularly important as Oracle accelerates data-center construction. The company spent $28.5 billion on capital expenditures during the quarter and expects fiscal 2027 capital spending of approximately $90 billion to $95 billion.
Stock Rally Meets a Capital-Intensive AI Strategy
Oracle shares rose sharply following the results as investors responded to the combination of stronger-than-expected growth, a record backlog and improved visibility into future cloud revenue. The company also raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings-per-share forecast to $8.10.
Oracle delivered an additional 850MW of data-center capacity during the quarter, reflecting the physical scale required to support its AI expansion. The company is also continuing to build out its data-center network to meet demand from major AI customers.
The strategy nevertheless carries significant financial and execution risks. Oracle must convert its large contract backlog into revenue while managing substantial capital expenditures, financing requirements and data-center construction. Its ability to expand infrastructure without allowing investment costs to erode returns will remain a central issue for investors.
Going forward, the key indicators will be the pace of Cloud Infrastructure growth, the conversion of the $664 billion backlog into recognized revenue and the economics of Oracle’s AI contracts. If demand remains strong while customer prepayments and other financing structures continue to limit Oracle’s capital burden, the company could strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI cloud market. At the same time, the scale of required investment means execution, financing and profitability will remain critical tests for the stock.
