Key Points
- Dell Technologies will join the S&P 100 effective September 21, 2026, reflecting its sharply increased market capitalization and importance within U.S. technology markets.
- Dell's recent growth has been driven by AI infrastructure, with second-quarter revenue rising 58% to $47 billion and AI-optimized server revenue doubling.
- The company exited the quarter with a $95 billion AI server backlog and raised its FY2027 revenue outlook to $192 billion, but valuation and AI spending-cycle risks are becoming increasingly relevant.
Dell Technologies’ elevation into the S&P 100 marks another step in the company’s transformation from a traditional PC and enterprise hardware manufacturer into a major provider of AI infrastructure. The move follows a dramatic multiyear increase in its market value, supported by accelerating demand for AI servers, networking and data-center infrastructure, while also placing greater attention on whether the current growth rate can be sustained.
Dell’s Market Status Has Changed Dramatically
S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Dell will join the S&P 100 on September 21, 2026, as part of the quarterly index rebalance. Dell will replace Honeywell Aerospace in the index, while Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks and Sandisk will also be added. The S&P 100 represents a group of major U.S. companies drawn from the broader S&P 500, making Dell’s inclusion a reflection of its increased scale and market relevance.
The timing is notable because Dell’s share-price performance has been extraordinary. Dell closed at approximately $535 on September 9, compared with roughly $71 in September 2023, representing a gain of more than 650% over approximately three years. The stock also reached an intraday record of nearly $563 during September trading, highlighting the speed at which investors have repriced the company around the AI infrastructure cycle.
AI Servers Have Become Dell’s Primary Growth Engine
Dell’s latest financial results provide a fundamental explanation for the rally. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027, revenue reached a record $47 billion, up 58% year over year, while diluted earnings per share increased 273% to $6.34. Infrastructure Solutions Group revenue rose 89% to $31.8 billion, with AI-optimized server revenue reaching $16.4 billion, up 100%.
More importantly, Dell booked a record $60.9 billion in AI server orders and ended the quarter with a $95 billion backlog. Traditional servers and networking also grew 122%, suggesting that demand is extending beyond the most advanced AI accelerators into broader data-center infrastructure. Dell has also begun shipping rack systems based on NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, strengthening its position within the rapidly expanding AI computing supply chain.
Guidance Signals Continued Infrastructure Spending
Dell has responded to the strength of demand by substantially raising its expectations for fiscal 2027. The company now projects $192 billion in annual revenue, up from its previous forecast of $167 billion, while non-GAAP earnings per share are expected to reach $25.50. AI-optimized server revenue is projected at $74 billion, compared with the previous $60 billion forecast.
The scale of the revisions illustrates how quickly AI infrastructure spending is flowing through Dell’s income statement. Revenue from the company’s traditional server and networking business, storage operations and commercial PC business is also expanding, creating a broader earnings base than the company’s AI exposure alone would suggest. Reuters reported that Dell’s shares rose sharply following the September earnings announcement as investors focused on the stronger forecast and $95 billion backlog.
For investors, however, the S&P 100 inclusion comes after much of the transformation has already been reflected in the share price. The key question is therefore shifting from whether AI demand can accelerate Dell’s business to whether AI infrastructure spending can remain large enough to justify the company’s elevated market expectations. Data-center capital expenditure, NVIDIA platform transitions, customer concentration, supply constraints and the eventual normalization of AI server growth will be important variables to monitor. If hyperscaler and neocloud spending remains strong, Dell could continue gaining strategic importance in the AI hardware ecosystem; if spending cycles slow, the stock’s substantial re-rating could make earnings expectations more sensitive to even modest changes in growth.
