NVIDIA is expanding its AI infrastructure footprint in Australia through partnerships with local data-center and cloud providers, targeting up to 2GW of AI-related capacity by 2027. The initiative comes as demand for high-performance computing continues to accelerate globally, pushing technology companies and infrastructure operators to secure power, land and data-center capacity at increasingly large scale.

NVIDIA Builds a Broader Australian AI Ecosystem

NVIDIA is working with Australian infrastructure and cloud companies including Firmus, CDC, NEXTDC, AirTrunk, Sharon AI, IREN, ResetData and Megaport. The participating providers are expected to operate the AI facilities, while NVIDIA will supply its DSX platform, accelerated computing, networking, software and broader ecosystem support.

The planned infrastructure is designed to support multiple generations of NVIDIA computing systems. The objective extends beyond simply adding data-center capacity, with the infrastructure intended to give Australian startups, enterprises, universities, researchers and AI-focused companies greater access to advanced computing resources.

Australia currently has approximately 1.6GW of data-center capacity, meaning the planned expansion would more than double the country’s existing capacity if the full 2GW target is achieved.

IREN Brings the 800MW Bundey Campus Into the Rollout

IREN is an important component of the expansion, with the company planning to integrate NVIDIA’s DSX architecture across its infrastructure portfolio. The company is bringing its Bundey campus in South Australia into the broader Australian AI infrastructure rollout.

The Bundey project is planned for up to 800MW of capacity and represents IREN’s first major data-center development in Australia. The site is positioned to benefit from access to renewable energy resources and subsea fiber connectivity linking Australia with major Asia-Pacific markets.

IREN’s involvement also reflects the company’s broader transition from its origins in Bitcoin mining toward large-scale AI infrastructure. The company has become an increasingly important participant in the emerging AI data-center market, where access to power and the ability to deploy NVIDIA GPUs at scale are critical competitive factors.

Power Supply Becomes a Strategic Constraint

The Australian expansion highlights one of the central challenges facing the global AI infrastructure boom: computing capacity cannot expand rapidly without corresponding growth in electricity supply. Large AI data centers require substantial amounts of power, advanced cooling systems and high-capacity network connections.

Australia is increasingly positioning itself as an attractive destination for data-center investment, supported by renewable-energy resources and growing digital infrastructure. At the same time, the rapid expansion is generating concerns over electricity and water consumption, as well as the ability of the national grid to accommodate large new loads.

The next stage will depend on how quickly the participating companies can secure power connections, construct facilities and deploy computing equipment. For NVIDIA, the Australian rollout expands the geographic reach of its AI infrastructure ecosystem. For IREN and its partners, the opportunity is closely tied to the continued growth of AI computing demand, while power availability, construction timelines and infrastructure costs will remain key factors determining how much of the planned 2GW capacity becomes operational by 2027.
