Key Points
- Apple TV now costs $14.99 per month or $119 annually in the U.S.
- The individual Apple One subscription increased to $21.95 from $19.95.
- Apple's services business generated $30.7 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 12% year over year.
Apple Raises Prices Across Its Subscription Portfolio
Apple increased the price of its Apple TV streaming service on Friday, marking another step in the company’s gradual repositioning of its subscription business. The monthly price now stands at $14.99, while the annual plan has increased to $119. Previously, customers paid $12.99 per month or $99 annually.
Apple also raised the price of the individual Apple One plan from $19.95 to $21.95. The bundle combines Apple TV with services including Apple Music and iCloud storage, giving the company an opportunity to increase revenue per customer while encouraging users to remain within its broader ecosystem.
The latest adjustment follows a $1 monthly increase for Apple Music in July, which Apple attributed to higher licensing costs. Taken together, the changes indicate that subscription pricing is becoming an increasingly important component of Apple’s services strategy.
Apple TV Moves Closer to Major Streaming Rivals
The price increase places Apple TV closer to the pricing levels of competing streaming platforms. When Apple launched the service in 2019 under the Apple TV+ name, the monthly subscription cost $4.99, positioning it as a relatively inexpensive alternative in a highly competitive market.
Since then, Apple has expanded its content offering considerably. Major productions such as “F1” and the return of “Ted Lasso” for a fourth season have strengthened the platform’s entertainment profile and potentially provided greater justification for higher subscription prices.
The strategic challenge is balancing higher prices against subscriber engagement. Streaming consumers have more choices than ever, meaning price increases can raise revenue per customer but also increase the risk of cancellations or consumers switching between services. Apple’s integrated ecosystem provides an important advantage because Apple TV can be bundled with other products rather than sold entirely as a standalone entertainment service.
Services Become More Important to Apple’s Growth Strategy
The pricing changes arrive as Apple continues to rely increasingly on its services business to diversify revenue beyond hardware. Apple reported $30.7 billion in services revenue in its third quarter, representing 12% year-over-year growth.
However, the business also faced margin pressure. Apple’s services gross margin declined by more than 1%, with the company citing product mix and foreign-exchange headwinds. This makes pricing decisions particularly significant because higher subscription prices can potentially support revenue growth while helping offset some cost pressures.
Services have also been a major strategic focus during Tim Cook’s tenure as CEO. With Cook scheduled to step down on September 1, the continued expansion of subscriptions represents an important part of the business model he leaves behind.
Going forward, investors will watch whether Apple’s higher prices translate into stronger services revenue without materially weakening customer retention. The performance of Apple TV, Apple One and other subscription products will increasingly matter as the company seeks to generate recurring revenue and deepen engagement across its ecosystem.
