Key Points
- Robotics and industrial automation are emerging as among BlackBerry's fastest-growing areas within its QNX embedded software business.
- QNX is currently deployed in more than 275 million vehicles, providing a foundation for expansion into robotics, medical devices and other safety-critical applications.
- BlackBerry has a QNX backlog of approximately $950 million, although management has not disclosed how much of that backlog is specifically attributable to robotics.
BlackBerry is increasingly positioning its QNX software platform beyond the automotive industry, with CEO John Giamatteo identifying robotics as one of the company’s fastest-growing businesses. The development highlights a broader shift in the technology industry toward physical AI, industrial automation and safety-critical software as intelligent machines become more autonomous and interconnected.
QNX Expands Beyond the Automotive Market
QNX has historically been closely associated with automotive applications, where its real-time operating system supports safety-critical functions. BlackBerry says the software is now deployed in more than 275 million vehicles globally, giving the company an established position from which to expand into adjacent embedded markets.
Giamatteo has identified robotics, industrial automation and medical instrumentation as important growth areas within QNX’s General Embedded Market strategy. Applications include automated mobile robots used in warehouses and manufacturing, surgical robotic systems and other equipment where reliability, precision and safety are critical requirements.
Physical AI Creates a New Growth Avenue
The expansion reflects the growing convergence between artificial intelligence and physical machines. Unlike conventional software applications, robots and autonomous systems operate in environments where software failures can have physical consequences, increasing the importance of deterministic, secure and safety-certified operating systems.
BlackBerry has argued that its experience in automotive software gives QNX capabilities that can transfer into these emerging markets. The company has also expanded its relationships with major semiconductor companies, including Nvidia, Qualcomm and ARM, as it seeks to broaden the QNX ecosystem across physical AI applications.
Growth Potential Comes With Execution Risks
The opportunity remains significant, but the robotics business is still developing from a relatively smaller base than BlackBerry’s established automotive operations. Management has described General Embedded Market as a fast-growing segment, while also acknowledging that many robotics opportunities remain at the pipeline and deployment stages rather than representing mature recurring revenue.
BlackBerry’s approximately $950 million QNX backlog provides visibility into future deployments, but the company has not disclosed the specific share attributable to robotics. This distinction will be important for investors assessing how quickly robotics can translate into measurable revenue and earnings growth.
Outlook: BlackBerry’s expansion into robotics could provide a meaningful avenue for diversification as demand for physical AI, industrial automation and safety-critical software develops. The key indicators to monitor will be new design wins, backlog conversion, royalty growth and the pace at which robotics customers move from development into commercial deployment. At the same time, competition, lengthy certification cycles and slower-than-expected adoption of autonomous machines could limit the speed of revenue realization. For investors, the central question is likely to be whether BlackBerry can translate its established automotive software expertise into a broader embedded technology platform without sacrificing execution discipline or profitability.
