U.S. markets are trading with a distinctly mixed tone on August 24, as investors assess divergent performance between smaller companies and the large technology stocks that have driven much of the market’s recent strength. The Russell 2000 is gaining 0.85%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 0.24%, but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq are lower, indicating that market leadership remains uneven.

The session also shows a modest strengthening of the U.S. dollar, while equity markets across Canada and Brazil are moving lower. With trading still underway, the current moves provide a snapshot rather than a final assessment of investor positioning.

Small Caps Outperform as Nasdaq Comes Under Pressure

The strongest performance among the major U.S. indexes is coming from the Russell 2000, which has advanced 0.85% to 3,017.87. The index provides exposure to smaller U.S. companies and is often viewed as a useful gauge of domestic economic sentiment because of its greater exposure to companies that generate a larger share of their business within the U.S. economy.

By contrast, the Nasdaq has fallen 0.62% to 26,019.18, marking the weakest performance among the major U.S. benchmarks in the current session. The technology-heavy index remains particularly sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations, corporate valuations and investor appetite for growth-oriented equities.

The S&P 500 is also under pressure, declining 0.26% to 7,654.40. The divergence between the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 suggests that the market is not experiencing a uniform reduction in risk appetite. Instead, capital is moving differently across segments of the equity market.

Dow Holds Up Better as Dollar Edges Higher

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is showing comparatively stronger performance, gaining 0.24% to 53,406.58. Its more defensive and value-oriented composition is helping it outperform the technology-heavy Nasdaq during the current session, although the difference remains relatively modest.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar Index has risen 0.11% to 98.91. The move is limited, but currency performance remains an important component of the broader market picture because changes in the dollar can influence multinational corporate earnings, commodity prices and global capital flows.

For international investors, the combination of a firmer dollar and weaker technology stocks is particularly relevant. A stronger U.S. currency can affect the translated earnings of American companies with significant overseas operations while also influencing the attractiveness of U.S. assets for investors holding other currencies.

Americas Show Broader Regional Divergence

Outside the United States, performance is also mixed. Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite has declined 0.12% to 36,578.03, while Brazil’s IBOVESPA is down 0.70% at 169,829.98. The contrast with the Russell 2000 underscores the different forces influencing individual markets, including domestic economic conditions, commodity exposure, currencies and sector composition.

Brazil’s decline is the sharpest among the listed Americas benchmarks, while Canada’s move is comparatively limited. These differences reinforce the importance of evaluating regional equity markets individually rather than treating the Americas as a single risk environment.

As Monday’s session continues, investors will be watching whether the current rotation toward small-cap stocks persists or whether technology shares recover from their early weakness. The direction of Treasury yields, developments in the U.S. dollar and shifts in expectations for monetary policy could influence market leadership through the remainder of the session. Broader regional performance will also remain important, particularly if weakness in international markets begins to affect U.S. sentiment. With trading still open, the key question is whether today’s divergence represents a temporary intraday move or the beginning of a more sustained change in equity-market leadership.
