Oil prices extended their rally on Thursday as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran increased uncertainty around global energy supplies. The move pushed crude benchmarks to their highest levels in nearly a month, highlighting the continued sensitivity of energy markets to geopolitical developments in the Middle East.

Geopolitical Risks Drive Energy Market Rally

Brent crude futures settled higher by $2.16, or 2.4%, at $93.78 per barrel, reaching their highest level since July 24. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September delivery gained $2, or 2.3%, to close at $87.83 per barrel, also marking their highest level since late July.

The increase followed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump warning of potential economic consequences for countries supporting Iran. Investors interpreted the statements as a sign that diplomatic uncertainty could continue, keeping pressure on oil markets already affected by disruptions in regional supply flows.

Middle East Supply Concerns Remain Central for Traders

The Middle East remains a critical factor for global energy markets due to its role in international oil production and transportation routes. Ongoing uncertainty surrounding Iran and shipping activity has encouraged traders to price in a higher risk premium for crude oil.

The United Arab Emirates’ decision to suspend financial and economic transactions with Iran added another layer of uncertainty, as markets assessed the potential impact of broader regional restrictions. Although actual supply losses remain a key variable, expectations of tighter availability have supported higher prices.

Economic Measures Add Pressure on Iran

The U.S. Treasury Secretary is expected to outline further actions targeting Iran, increasing attention on possible economic measures and their implications for energy flows. Restrictions affecting Iran’s ability to participate in international trade could influence market expectations, particularly if they affect crude exports.

Energy markets are closely monitoring whether diplomatic efforts can reduce tensions or whether additional measures could deepen supply concerns. The balance between geopolitical risks and global demand conditions will remain a major factor determining price movements.

Energy Markets Balance Supply Risks and Demand Outlook

Despite the geopolitical premium supporting prices, investors continue to evaluate broader market fundamentals, including global economic growth, inventory levels, and consumption trends. Oil markets remain sensitive to changes in demand expectations as central banks continue managing inflation and interest rate policies.

Looking ahead, traders will focus on developments in U.S.-Iran relations, potential policy actions, and any changes to Middle East energy flows. Further escalation could increase volatility across commodity markets, while diplomatic progress could reduce pressure on prices and improve supply expectations.
