Tencent Holdings is receiving renewed attention from investors as the early success of its WorkBuddy workplace assistant raises hopes that the Chinese internet giant can regain momentum in artificial intelligence.

Tencent has lagged some of China’s emerging AI companies in recent years, but WorkBuddy is beginning to provide evidence that the company’s massive user ecosystem could become a significant advantage in the AI race.

Launched in March, the AI workplace assistant has attracted a rapidly expanding user base. According to data cited by local media outlet 36kr from Analysys, WorkBuddy recorded 20.97 million monthly visits in June, surpassing ByteDance’s Trae and Alibaba’s QoderWork.

Investors are now waiting for Tencent’s upcoming earnings report for additional information about the platform’s adoption and performance.

AI Traction Could Change Investor Sentiment

Concrete evidence of WorkBuddy’s growth could become an important catalyst for Tencent shares.

The company’s valuation remains near a record low despite a recent recovery. Analysts believe stronger disclosure around WorkBuddy could help investors reassess Tencent’s position in China’s AI industry.

Barclays analyst Jiong Shao said WorkBuddy could change perceptions of Tencent if the company begins providing encouraging usage metrics. He also recently identified Tencent as a top pick, arguing that its long-term position gives it a stronger chance of becoming an AI winner.

Morningstar analyst Ivan Su similarly views WorkBuddy as one of the most important parts of Tencent’s AI strategy.

One major advantage is the potential integration of WorkBuddy with WeChat, Tencent’s widely used messaging and services platform. That integration could make the AI assistant more difficult for competing products to replace.

Workplace AI Becomes a Major Battleground

Workplace AI assistants are becoming an increasingly important area of competition because they target the broader white-collar workforce rather than focusing primarily on software developers.

Tencent is reportedly prioritizing WorkBuddy as competition intensifies. Baidu and MoonShot AI are among the other Chinese companies developing workplace-focused AI assistants.

The size of the potential market makes the category particularly important. If AI agents become deeply integrated into everyday office tasks, companies with established ecosystems and large user bases could have an advantage in distribution and adoption.

For Tencent, that ecosystem extends well beyond WeChat and includes gaming, payments, social networking and other digital services.

Spending Remains a Major Investor Concern

The potential AI opportunity comes with a significant financial consideration: investment.

Investors will closely examine Tencent’s capital spending plans in the upcoming earnings report. The company’s capital expenditures are expected to be comparable with Alibaba’s this year as both companies invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Tencent is projected to report nearly 10% revenue growth for the June quarter, while profit is expected to increase by about 5%.

That combination means investors will be watching not only whether AI adoption accelerates but also how much the company needs to spend to maintain its competitive position.

Tencent Stock Still Trails the Market

Tencent shares have rebounded nearly 17% from their June low, but the stock remains approximately 20% lower for the year.

That compares with an 11% decline for the Hang Seng Tech Index.

With a market value of approximately $557 billion, Tencent remains one of China’s largest technology companies. Its enormous ecosystem gives the company multiple avenues for integrating AI into existing products and services.

The question is whether that scale can translate into a meaningful competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving AI market.

Market Outlook

WorkBuddy has given Tencent a potentially important opportunity to change the narrative surrounding its AI ambitions. Its rapid user growth and potential integration with WeChat provide reasons for investors to reconsider the company’s position after years of lagging some AI-focused peers. However, the upcoming earnings report will be important for determining whether early user traction is translating into sustainable commercial value. If Tencent provides stronger evidence of WorkBuddy adoption while maintaining disciplined capital spending, the company’s depressed valuation could give the stock room to recover.
