Shares of Hyliion Holdings surged in overnight trading after investors responded positively to management’s vision of becoming a key supplier within the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure ecosystem.

The stock added more than 12% overnight after already climbing nearly 18% during Thursday’s regular session.

The move extends a remarkable rally that has seen Hyliion shares gain more than 318% in 2026 and post six consecutive weeks of gains.

CEO Says Power Is the Real AI Bottleneck

Chief Executive Officer Thomas Healy argued that the next major challenge facing artificial intelligence development is electricity generation.

According to Healy, companies such as Nvidia provide the computing power for AI systems, while firms like Vertiv focus on cooling and power distribution inside data centers. Hyliion aims to address what it views as the next critical layer: generating electricity itself.

“The constraint on AI deployment right now isn’t chips, it isn’t talent, it isn’t data, it’s power,” Healy said.

Management believes growing electricity shortages and increasing demand from AI workloads will push more data center operators toward on-site power generation solutions.

KARNO Technology Targets Grid Independence

At the center of Hyliion’s strategy is its KARNO generator technology, acquired from GE Additive in 2022 for $37 million.

The fuel-agnostic system can operate using natural gas, diesel, hydrogen, propane, and other fuel sources while providing localized electricity generation.

Healy believes future data centers will increasingly generate their own electricity rather than relying exclusively on traditional utility grids.

The company argues that its technology can help customers secure power more quickly and potentially at lower cost than waiting for grid expansion projects.

Potential Applications Extend Beyond Data Centers

While AI infrastructure has become the primary investor focus, management sees broader opportunities for KARNO systems.

Potential customers include major retailers, military installations, industrial facilities, and other organizations requiring reliable on-site power generation.

The company is currently executing approximately $20 million in military contracts, including work with the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research.

Management also expects to secure an additional $40 million to $50 million in military-related contracts during 2026.

Commercial Pipeline Continues to Expand

Hyliion recently signed a non-binding letter of intent with VFG Holdings to deploy up to 250 KARNO cores over five years, representing approximately 50 megawatts of power generation capacity.

Management says total signed non-binding agreements now cover nearly 750 KARNO cores.

At current pricing levels, those agreements represent approximately $400 million in potential future revenue if converted into finalized contracts.

The company expects to commercialize the KARNO platform before the end of 2026 and plans to deploy approximately 10 early-adopter units initially.

Financial Performance Shows Early Progress

Hyliion remains in the early stages of commercialization, but recent financial results demonstrated accelerating growth.

During the first quarter of 2026, revenue increased 460% year-over-year to $2.8 million.

Management is targeting approximately $10 million in revenue for the full year as it moves from development toward broader commercial deployment.

Investors are increasingly valuing the company based on its future position within AI infrastructure rather than its current revenue base.

Retail Sentiment Turns Bullish

Retail investor sentiment has improved significantly alongside the stock’s rally.

Online trading communities have shifted from bearish to bullish views as trading activity and discussion volumes increase.

The enthusiasm reflects growing interest in companies positioned to benefit from the AI infrastructure buildout beyond traditional semiconductor manufacturers.

Outlook

Hyliion’s recent surge highlights how investors are expanding their search for AI beneficiaries beyond chipmakers and software providers.

If management successfully commercializes its KARNO technology and converts its growing pipeline into signed contracts, the company could emerge as a niche player in the increasingly important market for distributed power generation.

However, much of the current optimism remains tied to future execution, making commercialization milestones and contract conversions key developments to watch in the coming quarters.
