South Korea’s push to become a global AI powerhouse is accelerating, and a key battleground is emerging in semiconductor sourcing. AI startup Upstage is in talks to acquire 10,000 advanced AI chips from Advanced Micro Devices, signaling a strategic shift away from heavy reliance on Nvidia. Upstage is exploring a major procurement of AMD’s latest AI accelerators, including the MI355 series, as part of efforts to expand domestic computing power. The discussions followed a meeting between Upstage CEO Sung Kim and AMD CEO Lisa Su.

While Nvidia remains dominant in AI chips, supply constraints and pricing pressures are pushing companies to diversify. By incorporating AMD hardware, Upstage aims to reduce dependency risks while optimizing cost-performance ratios for large-scale model training.

Korea’s “AI Squid Game” Intensifies Competition

The procurement effort is closely tied to South Korea’s national AI initiative, informally dubbed the “AI Squid Game.” Backed by the government, the program pits leading AI teams against each other in a multi-stage competition to develop advanced foundation models.

Participants are evaluated every six months, with top performers gaining access to greater computational resources—particularly high-demand GPUs. This structure is designed to accelerate innovation while concentrating resources on the most competitive teams.

Upstage is among the leading contenders, currently developing a large language model with approximately 200 billion parameters, positioning itself as a serious challenger in the global AI race.
