Key Points
- The TA-125 Index fell 0.68% on August 5 as declining stocks significantly outnumbered gainers, reflecting another broad-based pullback in the Israeli equity market.
- The TA-35 Index lost 0.66%, while the TA-90 declined 0.53%, extending weakness across both large- and mid-cap shares.
- Israel's bond market continued to outperform equities, with the All-Bond General Index rising 0.11% amid strong investor demand for fixed-income securities.
Israeli stocks closed lower on Wednesday, August 5, as selling pressure spread across nearly every major segment of the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. The session followed Tuesday’s mixed performance and saw investors adopt a more defensive stance, with declines recorded across large-cap, mid-cap, banking, value, and sector indexes.
While equities struggled, Israel’s bond market posted another positive session, underscoring investors’ continued preference for lower-risk assets amid ongoing market uncertainty.
Broad-Based Selling Returns to Israeli Equities
The TA-35 Index declined 0.66% to close at 4,117.47 points. Market breadth remained negative, with 15 advancing constituents versus 19 decliners and one unchanged stock, indicating weakness among many of Israel’s largest listed companies.
The broader TA-125 Index fell 0.68% to finish at 4,023.14 points. Declining stocks outnumbered gainers by more than two to one, with 85 securities falling compared with 38 advancing, while two remained unchanged.
Stock market turnover totaled approximately NIS 5.09 billion, reflecting active trading as investors adjusted positions during the market decline.
The broad deterioration in market breadth suggested that selling pressure extended beyond individual sectors, weighing on overall investor sentiment.
Mid-Caps, Banks, and Value Stocks Continue to Weaken
Mid-cap companies remained under pressure during the session.
The TA-90 Index dropped 0.53% to close at 3,731.94 points. Only 23 securities advanced while 66 declined, highlighting continued weakness among medium-sized companies.
The TA-90 and Banks Index fell 0.94% to 3,905.14 points. Advancing securities totaled 23, while 71 declined, indicating that banking and financial shares contributed meaningfully to the day’s losses.
The TA-125 Value Index also declined 0.94%, ending the session at 4,042.19 points. Value-oriented stocks remained under pressure, with just 16 gainers compared with 38 decliners.
The Tel Aviv Sector-Balance Index slipped 0.66% to 4,570.28 points. Market breadth remained firmly negative, as 66 stocks declined while only 32 advanced.
The session reflected cautious investor positioning as weakness remained widespread across multiple sectors despite relatively healthy trading activity.
Bond Market Maintains Positive Momentum
Israel’s fixed-income market once again outperformed equities, extending its recent period of stability.
The All-Bond General Index rose 0.11% to close at 432.60 points. Bond market breadth remained strong, with 459 advancing issues compared with 108 decliners.
The Short-Term Bond Index edged 0.01% higher to finish at 477.39 points, continuing its gradual upward trend.
Corporate bonds also posted gains. The Tel Bond-Adjoined A Index advanced 0.10% to 439.02 points, while the Tel Bond 60 Adjacent Index gained 0.13% to close at 428.96 points.
Bond market turnover reached approximately NIS 3.97 billion, demonstrating sustained investor participation in fixed-income securities as equity markets weakened.
Market Outlook
Wednesday’s decline reinforces the cautious tone that has recently returned to Israeli equities, with negative market breadth indicating that selling pressure remains widespread across sectors. Investors will continue watching corporate earnings, domestic economic data, global monetary policy expectations, and geopolitical developments for signs of improving sentiment. A recovery in market breadth alongside renewed strength in large-cap and financial shares would be needed to support a more durable rebound, while continued investor preference for bonds suggests defensive positioning remains a dominant theme.
