Tel Aviv Market Opens October With Mixed Performance

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange closed October 1 with a sharp divergence between the leading equity benchmarks. Tel Aviv-35 gained 0.34% to 4,218.25, while Tel Aviv-125 edged 0.08% lower to 4,072.30. The broader Tel Aviv-90 moved substantially lower, declining 1.46% to 3,637.45.

The session followed a mixed September 30, when the TA-90 had gained 0.57% while the TA-35 declined 0.43%. Thursday’s trading therefore showed renewed weakness across several broader market segments despite the modest gain in the blue-chip index.

Broad Market Weakness Weighs on Mid- and Small-Cap Stocks

Market breadth was notably negative outside the largest companies. Within the Tel Aviv-90, 66 securities declined compared with only 23 advancers. The Tel Aviv-125 also recorded 86 declining securities against 39 gainers, indicating that the near-flat performance of the headline index masked considerable weakness among its constituents.

The Tel Aviv-200 fell 1.04%, with 150 declining securities compared with 48 advancing securities. The Tel Aviv-SME60 experienced an even sharper decline of 2.10%, falling to 1,296.33, with just five advancers against 55 decliners.

Financial stocks also weakened, with the Tel Aviv 90 and banks index declining 0.67%. The Tel Aviv Sector-Balance index fell 0.66% to 4,605.80.

The Tel Aviv-20 was a notable exception, rising 0.17%, suggesting that some of the larger constituents provided support to the narrower large-cap segments.

Trading Activity Remains Significant

Total stock turnover reached approximately NIS 3.23 billion, while bond turnover totaled approximately NIS 4.09 billion. The Tel Aviv-125 generated approximately NIS 2.48 billion in turnover, while the Tel Aviv-200 recorded approximately NIS 2.53 billion.

Tel Aviv-35 turnover stood at approximately NIS 1.92 billion, and the Tel Aviv Sector-Balance index recorded approximately NIS 2.34 billion.

The combination of elevated turnover and negative breadth in broader indices indicates that the market’s relatively stable headline performance did not reflect uniform conditions across individual securities.

Nice Rises as Doral Energy Falls Sharply

Individual stock performance added another layer of divergence to the session. Nice rose 6.41% to 35,030, making it the strongest notable gainer from the TA-125 Index.

Doral Energy moved sharply lower, falling 7.69% to 5,077. The contrasting movements demonstrate the continued dispersion among individual TA-125 constituents even as the overall index remained close to unchanged.

Looking ahead, investors will be watching whether the weakness in the TA-90, TA-200 and SME60 continues or begins to stabilize in the next sessions. The TA-35’s ability to hold above 4,200 and the TA-125’s position near 4,072 will provide important reference points, while market breadth will be particularly relevant given the large gap between advancing and declining securities. Trading activity in both equities and bonds, along with sharp moves in individual stocks such as Nice and Doral Energy, will also remain important indicators as October trading develops.
