Key Points
- Annual profit forecast exceeds expectations: Starbucks projected adjusted earnings of $3.15 to $3.25 per share, slightly above analysts' estimate of $3.14, as operational changes begin to support its recovery.
- Comparable sales outperform forecasts: Global same-store sales increased 7.2% in the fourth quarter, beating expectations of 5.4%, while adjusted earnings reached $0.80 per share against an estimated $0.72.
- Technology and modernization become priorities: CEO Brian Niccol plans to focus on digital tools, operational efficiency and supply chain improvements while the company targets approximately $1 billion in share repurchases.
Starbucks Signals Progress in Turnaround Strategy
Starbucks forecast annual adjusted earnings above analyst expectations, indicating that cost reductions and operational improvements under CEO Brian Niccol are beginning to support its recovery.
Niccol has spent the past two years simplifying menus, improving staffing levels and reducing customer wait times under the company’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy. During the latest earnings call, he said the initiative was moving beyond its turnaround phase and toward a broader growth plan.
The company has achieved more stable sales growth, although investors remain focused on whether stronger customer demand can translate into sustainable profitability.
Starbucks shares fell approximately 2% in extended trading following the announcement, suggesting that investors remain cautious about the company’s outlook despite the improved operating performance.
Sales Growth and Earnings Beat Expectations
Starbucks reported fourth-quarter global same-store sales growth of 7.2%, exceeding analysts’ expectations of a 5.4% increase. Adjusted earnings reached $0.80 per share, above the $0.72 consensus estimate.
For the coming year, the company forecast adjusted earnings per share of $3.15 to $3.25, compared with the analyst estimate of $3.14.
The results suggest that operational changes are helping improve customer demand. However, the company’s annual revenue outlook remained under pressure from its Chinese business, following the completion of a deal with Boyu Capital to sell control of its China operations.
The transaction valued the business at $4 billion and was intended to help restart growth in the region. Starbucks’ annual revenue forecast pointed to a 1% decline, compared with market expectations for growth of 1.4%.
Cost Controls and Store Operations Remain Central
Starbucks has pursued restructuring measures, including corporate layoffs and store closures, to offset nearly $500 million in labor investments associated with its turnaround.
The company has also worked to improve its supply chain, which has contributed to product shortages in previous years. Niccol said daily deliveries were reaching close to 90% of North American stores, while Starbucks was testing new methods to forecast product demand.
These improvements could help reduce stockouts, support more consistent store operations and improve the customer experience. At the same time, management must balance cost discipline with the staffing and service investments needed to sustain sales momentum.
Technology and Shareholder Returns in Focus
Starbucks plans to direct more attention toward technology and modernization in the coming year. Proposed initiatives include an artificial intelligence system to help baristas take drive-through orders and tools that could recognize participating customers, display personalized digital menus and simplify payments.
The company also said it aims to deploy approximately $1 billion toward share repurchases, signaling an additional focus on shareholder returns.
Nevertheless, competitive pressure remains a concern. Some analysts have pointed to younger consumers shifting toward alternatives such as 7 Brew, while the company continues working to rebuild customer loyalty.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors will monitor whether Starbucks can sustain comparable-sales growth while improving margins and converting its operational gains into stronger earnings.
The effectiveness of cost reductions, supply chain improvements and technology investments will be important to the next phase of the recovery. The company must also manage its China business transition and competition for younger customers.
Although the latest sales and earnings figures exceeded expectations, the modest share-price decline following the forecast highlights continued uncertainty about the pace of profitability improvement.
