800 MHz Spectrum Becomes a Strategic Asset for Satellite Operators

The spectrum in question is held by Grain Management following a recently completed spectrum transaction involving T-Mobile. The 800 MHz licenses are particularly valuable for direct-to-device applications because lower-frequency signals can travel longer distances and penetrate buildings more effectively than higher-frequency spectrum.

For satellite operators, access to suitable low-band spectrum can significantly improve the economics and technical performance of direct-to-device services. Instead of requiring consumers to purchase specialized satellite phones or terminals, the technology is designed to allow existing smartphones to connect with satellites when terrestrial cellular coverage is unavailable.

The reported interest from SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile therefore reflects the increasing importance of spectrum ownership and access in the next phase of satellite connectivity.

AST SpaceMobile Is Building a Direct-to-Device Network

AST SpaceMobile has made direct-to-device connectivity the central focus of its business strategy. The company has already secured access to spectrum through partnerships with mobile operators and received U.S. regulatory authorization to provide supplemental coverage from space using 700 MHz and 800 MHz spectrum.

AST SpaceMobile is working with major telecommunications companies, including AT&T and Verizon, allowing its satellite network to complement existing terrestrial infrastructure. The company’s strategy is designed to extend cellular coverage into areas where traditional towers are unavailable or uneconomical.

Additional access to 800 MHz spectrum could potentially increase network capacity and provide greater control over the frequencies used for satellite-to-phone communications. SpaceX Raises the Competitive Stakes
