SpaceX significantly increased its investment in Tesla Megapack battery storage systems during the second quarter of 2026 as the company expands the energy infrastructure supporting its rapidly growing artificial intelligence operations. Financial filings show the purchases are closely tied to the development of SpaceXAI’s Colossus data centers, highlighting how reliable power supply has become a strategic priority in the global AI race.

The investment underscores a broader trend among hyperscale technology companies, where spending on energy infrastructure is becoming nearly as important as investments in processors, servers, and networking equipment. As AI workloads continue to expand, battery storage systems are emerging as a critical component of next-generation data center operations.

Megapack Purchases Reflect AI Infrastructure Expansion

During the quarter ended June 30, SpaceX purchased approximately $295 million worth of Tesla Megapacks, bringing total spending during the first six months of 2026 to approximately $329 million. The utility-scale battery systems are being deployed at the company’s Colossus and Colossus 2 AI facilities in the Greater Memphis area.

Megapacks allow operators to store electricity and stabilize power supplies during periods of high demand or grid instability. For AI data centers, which require continuous, uninterrupted computing capacity, large-scale energy storage helps reduce operational risk while improving resilience against outages. The systems can store electricity generated from both renewable sources and conventional power generation, providing operational flexibility as computing requirements continue to rise.

Energy Infrastructure Becomes a Competitive Advantage

The latest purchases demonstrate how energy infrastructure has become an increasingly important competitive factor in the artificial intelligence industry. Companies building massive AI clusters are investing not only in advanced semiconductors but also in the electrical infrastructure required to support continuous high-performance computing.

Tesla is one of several global suppliers competing in the battery storage market. According to industry research, competitors include China’s Sungrow, BYD, and CATL, South Korea’s LG, and U.S.-based Fluence. As global AI investment accelerates, demand for utility-scale battery storage is expected to remain strong alongside continued expansion in cloud computing and data center construction.

For investors, the spending illustrates that future AI capital expenditures extend well beyond chips and servers, encompassing electrical grids, battery systems, cooling infrastructure, and power generation assets that collectively determine computing capacity.

Environmental Challenges Accompany Rapid Growth

While battery storage improves grid reliability, SpaceXAI’s Memphis facilities have also relied on dozens of natural gas-powered turbines to generate electricity. Those installations have drawn criticism from local communities concerned about emissions, noise, air quality, and public health impacts.

The controversy reflects a broader challenge facing the global AI industry. As companies race to deploy increasingly powerful computing clusters, securing sufficient electricity has become both an engineering and regulatory issue. Community resistance, environmental permitting, and grid capacity could become important variables influencing the pace of future AI infrastructure development.

For Israeli and global investors, the developments highlight how the AI investment cycle is expanding into adjacent industries, including battery storage, utilities, electrical equipment, and energy infrastructure. Companies capable of supporting growing electricity demand may increasingly benefit as hyperscalers continue scaling AI operations worldwide.

Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor the pace of AI infrastructure spending, additional battery storage deployments, evolving energy regulations, and the balance between operational growth and environmental compliance. The ability of technology companies to secure reliable, scalable, and sustainable power supplies is likely to become an increasingly important factor shaping the next phase of the global AI expansion.
