Key Points
- The S&P 500 gained 0.65% to a record 7,798.99 as technology stocks rallied and softer July producer-price data reduced expectations of a September rate increase.
- The Nasdaq advanced 0.81% to 26,803.03, led by strong gains in Sandisk and Micron, while the Dow rose 0.13% to 53,839.99.
- Market optimism around artificial intelligence remained strong, although sharp declines in Cisco Systems and Tapestry showed that elevated expectations continue to raise the bar for corporate results.
U.S. equities closed at record levels on August 13 as moderate producer-price data and continued strength in technology stocks reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged at its September meeting. The S&P 500 reached a new closing high, while the Nasdaq also advanced sharply as investors continued to assess earnings and capital spending across the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
S&P 500 Reaches New Record as Technology Leads
The S&P 500 climbed 0.65% to 7,798.99, surpassing its previous record close from the prior Friday. The Nasdaq gained 0.81% to 26,803.03, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.13% to 53,839.99.
Technology remained a major source of market momentum. Memory-chip manufacturer Sandisk surged 13.7%, while Micron Technology gained 4.2%. Microsoft added almost 1% and Meta Platforms rose 2.8%, helping maintain the market’s recent AI-related leadership.
Seven of the 11 S&P 500 sector indexes finished higher. Communication services led the advance with a 1.56% gain, followed by real estate at 1.34%. The breadth of the move was also relatively constructive, with advancing stocks outnumbering declining shares within the S&P 500 by approximately 1.7 to one.
Producer Prices Reinforce Expectations for Stable Fed Policy
The latest economic data provided an additional catalyst for equities. U.S. producer prices were unchanged in July, as lower goods prices offset a modest increase in the cost of services. The data was softer than expected and reduced concerns that wholesale price pressures were accelerating enough to influence the Federal Reserve toward another rate increase.
Labor-market data also pointed to a relatively stable environment. Initial claims for unemployment benefits increased moderately during the latest week, suggesting some cooling without providing evidence of a sharp deterioration in employment conditions.
Market pricing reflected the combination of these signals. Traders were assigning a 63% probability that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged in September, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool. The outlook is important for equity valuations because a less restrictive monetary-policy environment can reduce pressure on companies whose valuations are particularly sensitive to interest rates.
AI Investment Supports Optimism, but Expectations Remain High
The technology rally continued despite some evidence that investors are demanding increasingly strong results from companies associated with AI infrastructure. CoreWeave shares declined 1.3% after surging 19% in the previous session when the AI cloud company raised its annual capital-spending forecast.
Recent forecasts from companies including Microsoft and Amazon have helped reduce concerns that massive investment in AI data centers will not translate into sufficient revenue growth. The latest market performance suggests that investors remain focused on the earnings potential generated by AI infrastructure spending rather than viewing the capital cycle solely as a cost burden.
However, individual disappointments demonstrate the risks created by elevated expectations. Cisco Systems fell 8.4% despite providing an upbeat revenue forecast, while Tapestry plunged more than 16% after projecting muted annual revenue growth. The contrasting reactions show that strong headline earnings or forecasts may no longer be sufficient when market expectations are already elevated.
Record Levels Meet a More Selective Market
The S&P 500 is now approximately 14% higher in 2026, while the Nasdaq has gained about 15%. The continued advance has occurred alongside relatively light trading volume, with approximately 16.1 billion shares changing hands compared with a 20-session average of 17.5 billion.
That combination of record index levels and below-average volume warrants attention. It does not necessarily undermine the rally, but it suggests that the strength of the latest advance should continue to be evaluated through earnings breadth, economic data and participation across sectors rather than index performance alone.
Looking ahead, investors will monitor upcoming inflation and employment data, Federal Reserve communication and the ability of AI-related companies to convert elevated capital expenditure into sustainable earnings growth. The S&P 500’s move to a new record highlights strong market confidence, but valuations and corporate expectations remain sensitive to any change in the interest-rate outlook. The next phase of the rally will therefore depend on whether moderate inflation, resilient earnings and broadening market participation can continue to reinforce one another.
