Wall Street Watches U.S.-Iran Developments

The market remained focused on whether the United States and Iran can reach an agreement that would restore unrestricted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has indicated that it is nearing an agreement with Oman concerning the waterway, but Tehran continues to resist direct negotiations with Washington. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that negotiations could not resume while the United States continues to violate what Iran described as a June memorandum of understanding.

The uncertainty pushed energy prices higher. West Texas Intermediate crude rose about 2% to above $80 per barrel, while Brent crude gained approximately 2% to above $85.

The renewed strength in oil prices represents a key risk for investors because a prolonged disruption around Hormuz could increase energy costs and contribute to renewed inflationary pressure.

Stocks Remain Near Record Levels

Despite the geopolitical uncertainty, U.S. equities remained close to record territory after the three major indexes posted their strongest weekly performance since April.

The S&P 500 finished the previous week at a record closing level after Friday’s weaker-than-expected employment report strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may avoid raising interest rates at its September meeting.

July nonfarm payrolls unexpectedly declined, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.1%. The disappointing labor-market data shifted investor expectations toward a potentially less restrictive monetary policy environment.

Fed funds futures now indicate an approximately 46% probability of a September rate increase, down from roughly 67% one week earlier.

Intel Weighs on the Technology Sector

Intel was a major laggard Monday, with shares falling approximately 4% after the company announced plans for a $15 billion common stock offering.

The semiconductor manufacturer intends to use the proceeds for corporate purposes, including capital expenditures and working capital, as it attempts to capitalize on growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Intel has benefited substantially from the AI investment cycle and the broader push to expand U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. However, the stock offering introduces potential dilution for existing shareholders and highlights the significant amount of capital required to compete in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

Oil Remains a Critical Market Variable

The direction of crude prices could remain one of the most important factors for markets in the coming sessions.

A successful agreement that restores normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could ease supply concerns and place downward pressure on oil prices. Conversely, continued restrictions or renewed hostilities could keep crude elevated and increase concerns about inflation.

Investors therefore face a market balancing strong equity momentum against geopolitical and monetary-policy uncertainty.

Market Outlook

The S&P 500’s ability to remain near record levels despite higher oil prices and uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Iran situation demonstrates the resilience of the current rally. However, the market’s next major move could depend heavily on whether negotiations produce a workable agreement for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, investors will continue monitoring Federal Reserve expectations, corporate earnings and the financial requirements of the AI investment cycle. If geopolitical tensions ease and rate-hike expectations continue to decline, equities could retain their upward momentum, but a renewed energy shock could quickly challenge the market’s recent gains.
