Key Points
- Palo Alto Networks reportedly paid $500 million in cash and stock for AI startup Console, according to people familiar with the transaction.
- Console had raised $29 million before the acquisition and was valued at approximately $157 million before the sale.
- The acquisition strengthens Palo Alto Networks’ agentic AI strategy by bringing Console’s automation technology into its Cortex security platform.
Palo Alto Networks is deepening its push into artificial intelligence with the acquisition of Console, a young startup that uses AI agents to automate enterprise IT operations. Although Palo Alto Networks announced the acquisition on September 1 without disclosing financial terms, the reported $500 million price highlights the growing premium for AI technologies that can move beyond analysis and execute tasks across complex enterprise environments.
Palo Alto Networks Reportedly Pays a Significant Premium
According to people familiar with the transaction, Palo Alto Networks paid approximately $500 million in a combination of cash and stock for Console. The companies did not publicly disclose the purchase price, making the reported figure unconfirmed by Palo Alto Networks.
Console was founded in 2024 and had raised $29 million through two funding rounds before being acquired. Thrive Capital led its $6.2 million seed round, while DST Global and Thrive co-led a $23 million Series A. Before the sale, Console was valued at approximately $157 million, meaning the reported acquisition price represents a substantial premium over its most recent private valuation.
The transaction also has a notable connection to Palo Alto Networks leadership. CEO Nikesh Arora was an early angel investor in Console, giving him prior exposure to the startup and its technology before the company became part of Palo Alto Networks.
Console Brings Agentic AI Into Cybersecurity
Console developed AI agents designed to automate routine IT service-desk activities, including password resets, application access and troubleshooting. Its technology allows employees to make requests using natural language while the software interacts with enterprise systems to complete approved tasks.
Palo Alto Networks plans to integrate Console into Cortex, its cybersecurity platform. The combination could allow security teams to use natural-language interactions to investigate alerts, prioritize incidents and execute remediation actions across enterprise environments.
The move reflects a broader transformation in cybersecurity. Traditional security platforms have increasingly relied on AI to identify threats and recommend responses, but the next stage involves systems capable of taking action with limited human intervention. For enterprises facing growing volumes of alerts and increasingly sophisticated AI-enabled threats, automation could become an important component of security operations.
Another Acquisition in Palo Alto Networks’ Expansion Strategy
The Console transaction is Palo Alto Networks’ seventh acquisition in 2026, according to industry data. The company has also expanded through larger deals, including the reported $3.35 billion acquisition of observability platform Chronosphere and the $400 million purchase of cybersecurity startup Koi.
This acquisition strategy is consistent with Palo Alto Networks’ broader effort to build an integrated cybersecurity platform spanning network security, cloud protection, observability and AI-driven operations. Console adds another layer by focusing on the execution of tasks rather than simply identifying problems.
For investors, the next issue will be whether Palo Alto Networks can translate Console’s technology into measurable customer adoption and incremental recurring revenue. The reported $500 million price also raises expectations for successful integration, particularly as competition intensifies among cybersecurity companies seeking to establish leadership in agentic AI.
Palo Alto Networks will need to demonstrate that Console can scale within Cortex while maintaining security, governance and reliability. The ability to turn AI agents into practical enterprise security tools could strengthen the company’s platform strategy, while integration challenges and the cost of continued acquisitions remain important factors to monitor as the cybersecurity market enters a more AI-intensive phase.
