Ouster, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker OUST, is expanding its position in sensing and physical AI with the Rev8 OS1 Max, a lidar sensor designed to combine high-resolution 3D depth data with native color. The technology is particularly relevant to drone mapping, where range, precision and the ability to identify smaller objects are becoming increasingly important for infrastructure inspections, surveying and industrial applications.

Rev8 OS1 Max Brings Native Color to Lidar

The OS1 Max is the flagship model in Ouster’s Rev8 product family and is built around the company’s L4 Max architecture with 256 channels. According to Ouster, it provides twice the range and twice the resolution of the Rev7 generation. The sensor can detect objects at distances of up to 200 meters under 10% reflectivity conditions, with a maximum detection range of 500 meters and a 45-degree vertical field of view.

The key development is native color integration. Rather than relying on separate camera and depth systems that must be combined through software, each lidar point is captured with associated color information. Ouster says the sensor provides 48-bit color depth and a 116 dB dynamic range. For 3D mapping, the combination can produce richer visual datasets while simplifying the integration of depth and image information.

Longer Range Expands Drone Mapping Capabilities

The technology is already being incorporated into drone-based mapping applications. GeoCue has integrated the Rev8 OS1 Max into its TrueView platform alongside LP360 software following joint flight testing and firmware calibration. The system is designed for infrastructure and utility surveying, including long corridor mapping and inspections of structures and power lines.

The OS1 Max is also designed to identify narrow objects such as utility wires and structural edges. Its 256 channels allow it to maintain high point density at faster flight speeds, while the 200-meter range can enable drones to operate at higher altitudes without sacrificing the quality of collected mapping data.

Ouster Links Product Expansion to Broader Growth

The launch comes as Ouster seeks to expand lidar beyond autonomous vehicles into smart infrastructure, robotics, industrial systems and physical AI. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported $55 million in revenue and shipments of more than 17,000 lidar sensors and cameras. Ouster said the quarter represented its 14th consecutive quarter of product revenue growth.

The company is also expanding its technology ecosystem. Rev8 has been integrated with NVIDIA’s Jetson platform and tested in mapping and industrial inspection applications, while the GeoCue integration illustrates how Ouster’s sensors can move from development into commercial field deployments.

Going forward, investors will be watching Rev8 adoption, commercial order growth and Ouster’s ability to convert its technical improvements into recurring revenue. For the drone mapping market, the key question is whether native color, longer range and higher resolution can make lidar a more central component of complex infrastructure, surveying and autonomous systems.
