Oil prices climbed to their highest level in more than three weeks on Tuesday as fading expectations for a US-Iran peace agreement increased concerns over potential supply disruptions. The move highlights how geopolitical developments continue to influence energy markets, with investors balancing supply risks against broader concerns about global demand and economic conditions.

Geopolitical Risks Push Oil Prices Higher

Brent crude futures settled at $91.02 per barrel, gaining 15 cents, or 0.17%, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures closed at $84.94 per barrel, rising 44 cents, or 0.52%. Both benchmarks ended the session at their highest levels since July 24.

The gains followed comments from Iran indicating a more aggressive position in regional tensions and stating that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed. The United States also indicated that it was not extending a ceasefire arrangement, reducing expectations that diplomatic progress would quickly ease supply concerns.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Central to Energy Markets

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important energy transit routes globally, with disruptions posing potential risks to crude oil flows. Market participants have been closely monitoring developments in the region because any prolonged restrictions could affect global supply availability and increase price volatility.

However, the market response remained relatively measured compared with previous geopolitical disruptions. The limited price increase suggests that traders are factoring in uncertainty while waiting for clearer signals regarding the duration and potential impact of the tensions.

Analysts Assess Balance Between Supply Risks and Market Fundamentals

Energy analysts expect continued uncertainty surrounding US-Iran relations to provide support for oil prices in the near term. At the same time, prices remain influenced by broader factors, including global economic growth expectations, inventory levels and demand trends from major consumers.

The oil market has recently faced competing forces, with geopolitical risks supporting prices while concerns about economic activity limiting stronger moves. This balance has created a more cautious environment for energy traders and companies exposed to commodity price fluctuations.

Market Focus Turns to Next Diplomatic and Supply Developments

Future oil market direction will depend heavily on developments in US-Iran relations, the status of shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz and whether supply disruptions become more pronounced. Investors will also continue monitoring global demand indicators and central bank policies that could influence economic growth and energy consumption.

Going forward, geopolitical uncertainty, supply security and inflation risks will remain important drivers for energy markets. A further escalation could place additional upward pressure on crude prices, while renewed diplomatic progress could reduce risk premiums and shift attention back toward fundamental market conditions.
