Key Points

  • The Nasdaq gained 2.26% to a record-high close as semiconductor and AI-related shares led a broad technology rebound.
  • AMD reached a $1 trillion market capitalization, while Intel gained 12.2% and Arm Holdings rose 17%, pushing the PHLX semiconductor index higher.
  • The retreat in Treasury yields and oil prices provided additional support, although markets continue to price roughly a 50% probability of another Fed rate hike next month.

U.S. equities rebounded sharply on Monday, with the Nasdaq reaching a record-high close as renewed optimism over artificial intelligence spending pushed semiconductor stocks higher. Falling Treasury yields and easing crude prices also improved the market backdrop, temporarily offsetting concerns over inflation, geopolitical tensions and the Federal Reserve’s tightening cycle.

AI Trade Regains Momentum

The technology sector provided the strongest impulse to the broader market. The Nasdaq gained 2.26% to 27,122.09, while the S&P 500 advanced 1.49% to 7,764.70 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.71% to 52,048.83. The Nasdaq’s close marked its first record since June 2, while the S&P 500 finished roughly 0.4% below its previous record.

Semiconductor companies were at the center of the rally. AMD gained about 10% and crossed the $1 trillion market-capitalization threshold for the first time. Intel surged 12.2%, Arm Holdings rose 17% and the PHLX semiconductor index gained 4.3%. The moves indicate that investor attention has shifted back toward the potential earnings and infrastructure demand associated with AI, following recent concerns over AI safety and the sustainability of technology spending.

AMD’s Milestone Highlights AI Investment Concentration

AMD’s valuation milestone is particularly significant because the company has increasingly positioned itself as Nvidia’s closest major U.S. competitor in AI computing. Its strategy has expanded beyond individual processors toward integrated systems combining chips, networking equipment and other hardware, while demand for server CPUs has helped the company gain ground in areas historically dominated by Intel.

AMD shares have gained 185% in 2026, substantially exceeding the Nasdaq’s 15.8% advance over the same period, according to Reuters. The stock was trading at roughly 41 times forward earnings, below its 10-year average of 44 times but considerably above Nvidia’s reported multiple of about 16.3 times. The valuation gap illustrates how strongly expectations for future AI-related growth have become embedded in parts of the semiconductor market.

Lower Yields and Oil Ease Macro Pressure

Beyond technology, the day’s rally was supported by a decline in two important market pressures: Treasury yields and crude prices. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell below 5%, retreating from levels that had recently increased concerns about borrowing costs and equity valuations. At the same time, Brent crude fell below $100 per barrel before settling at $100.34, its lowest level since September 9.

The combination matters because lower bond yields can reduce the relative valuation pressure on growth stocks, while weaker oil prices can ease concerns about additional inflation. However, Brent remains above $100, meaning energy costs continue to represent a significant inflationary variable for businesses and consumers. The market is therefore responding to a short-term improvement rather than a complete removal of the underlying macroeconomic risks.

Fed Outlook Remains a Key Market Variable

Despite Monday’s strong equity performance, monetary policy remains an important constraint. The Federal Reserve raised rates last week for the first time in three years, and traders were pricing roughly a 50% probability of another increase in October, according to CME FedWatch. Markets are also preparing for commentary from at least 10 central bank policymakers this week, which could provide additional clues about the path of interest rates.

Going forward, investors will be watching whether the retreat in Treasury yields and oil prices persists while AI-related earnings expectations continue to strengthen. The durability of the Nasdaq rally will depend on the interaction between AI capital spending, corporate earnings, inflation and monetary policy. A renewed rise in energy prices or bond yields could quickly restore pressure on technology valuations, while sustained moderation in both would provide a more supportive backdrop for global equity markets.
