Key Points
- The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.44%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.06% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.38%.
- Oil prices climbed nearly $2 a barrel after deadly attacks on Riyadh’s international airport, renewing concerns over energy-market pressures.
- Investors are turning toward third-quarter earnings and economic data for signals on corporate performance and the broader market outlook.
U.S. stocks ended mixed on Monday as technology shares came under pressure while oil prices rallied following attacks on a Saudi airport. The Nasdaq Composite was the weakest of the three major indexes as investors prepared for the start of the third-quarter earnings season and awaited economic data that could influence expectations for growth, inflation and monetary policy.
Technology Stocks Lead the Market Lower
The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.44% on Monday, contrasting with a 0.06% decline in the S&P 500 and a 0.38% gain for the Dow. The divergence highlights a more cautious tone toward technology and growth-oriented shares as investors assess whether elevated valuations can be supported by corporate earnings in an environment of changing economic and energy-market conditions.
Several individual stocks also drew attention. Salesforce gained after BofA Global Research adopted a more bullish view of the company, while Chipotle shares declined after Starbucks said it was not acquiring the restaurant chain. Microsoft also returned to a $4 trillion market capitalization for the first time in a year, underscoring the continued influence of major technology companies on broader U.S. equity benchmarks.
Oil Rally Adds a New Market Risk
Energy markets provided a significant counterweight to the equity market’s cautious tone. Oil futures rallied nearly $2 a barrel after deadly strikes on Riyadh’s international airport over the weekend, raising concerns about potential disruptions and renewed geopolitical risk in a strategically important energy-producing region.
The move came despite expectations of additional supply following comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding fresh Russian diesel exports. Trump also discussed the possibility of a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire involving energy targets. The conflicting forces of potential additional supply and heightened geopolitical risk are creating a more complicated outlook for energy prices.
Earnings Season Moves to Center Stage
The market is entering an important period as major U.S. banks prepare to report their third-quarter results. Financial-sector earnings can provide investors with insight into credit conditions, consumer activity, corporate borrowing and the broader health of the U.S. economy.
The results will arrive alongside economic data expected during the week, giving investors multiple indicators with which to assess the direction of the economy and potential implications for monetary policy. A combination of resilient earnings and supportive economic data could reinforce market confidence, while weaker results or renewed inflationary pressure could increase volatility.
For global investors, the interaction between corporate earnings, oil prices and economic data will remain particularly important. Higher energy costs can feed into inflation and business expenses, while stronger earnings could provide support for equities. The coming sessions will therefore offer a clearer test of whether the recent market strength can withstand renewed geopolitical and energy-market pressures.
