Key Points
- Mobileye plans to launch a fully owned autonomous ride-hailing service in the United States in 2027, expanding beyond its traditional role as a self-driving technology supplier.
- The company will initially deploy around 100 robotaxis in a major U.S. city before targeting a fleet of approximately 17,000 vehicles over the following five years.
- The move creates a vertically integrated business model combining autonomous driving technology, fleet operations, mobility services, and rider applications under one platform.
Mobileye Expands Beyond Technology Licensing
Mobileye is taking a major step into the autonomous transportation market by launching its own robotaxi service in the United States beginning in 2027.
The company, best known for supplying advanced driver-assistance and autonomous driving technologies to automakers, will move beyond its traditional licensing model and operate its own ride-hailing business. The new initiative represents a significant strategic shift as Mobileye seeks to capture a larger share of the rapidly developing autonomous mobility market.
Building a Vertically Integrated Robotaxi Business
Unlike its current approach of providing technology to third parties, Mobileye plans to combine autonomous driving systems, fleet management, rider services, and mobility operations within a single business unit.
At the center of the service will be Mobileye Drive, the company’s self-driving platform designed for fully autonomous vehicle operations.
The company will also leverage technology from its subsidiary Moovit, which provides trip planning, mobility applications, rider services, and autonomous fleet management solutions. Additional fleet management and teleoperation capabilities will be integrated to support day-to-day operations.
Initial Launch Planned for 2027
Mobileye expects to begin operations with approximately 100 autonomous vehicles in a major U.S. metropolitan area during 2027.
The rollout will occur in stages throughout the year, allowing the company to validate its business model and operational capabilities under fully driverless conditions.
If the pilot proves successful, Mobileye intends to rapidly expand the service, targeting a fleet of roughly 17,000 autonomous vehicles within five years.
Partnerships Remain a Key Part of the Strategy
While Mobileye is launching its own ride-hailing service, the company emphasized that it remains committed to its existing relationships with automakers, mobility providers, and technology partners.
The robotaxi operation will run alongside Mobileye’s technology supply business, with both customer-led deployments and company-owned services expected to expand simultaneously.
To support the program, Mobileye plans to collaborate with vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators, integration partners, and technology suppliers.
Strong Ecosystem Provides Competitive Advantage
Mobileye enters the robotaxi market with a substantial installed base and mobility network.
The company says more than 230 million vehicles worldwide have been produced using its technology. Meanwhile, Moovit’s mobility platform serves over 1.7 billion users across more than 3,500 cities in 112 countries and supports 45 languages.
This broad ecosystem could provide Mobileye with valuable data, customer reach, and operational experience as it builds its autonomous transportation business.
Outlook
The launch of Mobileye’s own robotaxi service marks one of the company’s most ambitious moves since its founding. By combining autonomous driving technology with fleet operations and mobility services, Mobileye is positioning itself to compete directly in the emerging autonomous ride-hailing market.
If the initial deployment succeeds and the planned fleet expansion materializes, the company could become a significant player in the next generation of urban transportation while creating a new revenue stream beyond technology licensing.
