Key Points
- Cloud revenue exceeds expectations: Microsoft’s Azure revenue grew 48% to $33.17 billion in the first quarter ended September, beating analysts’ estimate of $32.84 billion.
- Free cash flow significantly outperforms forecasts: Microsoft generated $18.6 billion in free cash flow, more than double the Visible Alpha estimate of $8.54 billion.
- Capital spending falls below projections: Quarterly capital expenditure reached $45.2 billion, below Microsoft’s $50 billion forecast, as delayed third-party capacity deliveries slowed spending.
Microsoft Shares Rise After Strong Quarterly Results
Microsoft shares climbed approximately 4% in extended trading on Wednesday after the company reported stronger-than-expected cloud revenue and free cash flow. The results offered investors evidence that its substantial investments in artificial intelligence are supporting revenue growth and financial performance.
The report also contrasted with recent concerns about AI infrastructure spending at other major technology companies, where rising capital requirements have placed pressure on cash generation and increased financing needs.
Microsoft’s shares had gained approximately 9% through Wednesday’s close, according to the report. Its latest results may help ease concerns about the financial returns from AI investment and the company’s exposure to OpenAI.
Azure Growth Reflects Strong Enterprise Demand
Azure revenue increased 48% to $33.17 billion in the September quarter, exceeding analysts’ estimate of $32.84 billion. Revenue had reached $29.4 billion in the previous quarter.
The growth reflects sustained corporate demand for cloud computing and AI services. Microsoft has also begun disclosing Azure revenue in dollar terms rather than reporting only growth rates, giving investors a clearer view of its cloud business relative to Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.
Chief Executive Satya Nadella has sought to address growing corporate demand while managing the rising cost of AI adoption. Microsoft has introduced lower-cost models and expanded options for businesses to work across different AI systems, including through its Copilot Cowork agent.
This strategy aims to make AI adoption more accessible to companies concerned about escalating costs while strengthening Microsoft’s position in enterprise software and cloud services.
Free Cash Flow Surges Above Expectations
Microsoft reported free cash flow of $18.6 billion, exceeding the Visible Alpha estimate of $8.54 billion by approximately $10.1 billion. The stronger result came as revenue grew and infrastructure spending remained below the company’s earlier projection.
Capital expenditure totaled $45.2 billion, up from $34.9 billion a year earlier but below the $50 billion forecast for the quarter. Microsoft attributed the difference to delays in third-party capacity deliveries rather than a change in its underlying investment plans.
The distinction is important for investors. Lower-than-expected spending supported near-term cash flow, but the company indicated that delivery delays, rather than reduced investment commitments, explained the shortfall.
AI Spending and Financing Risks Remain in Focus
Major technology companies are expected to invest more than $700 billion collectively this year in data centers, computing hardware and the energy infrastructure needed to support AI development and deployment.
While faster revenue growth suggests these investments may be generating returns, concerns about financing costs and debt have intensified. Recent market pressure involving Meta, Oracle and AI infrastructure provider CoreWeave has highlighted the financial risks associated with large-scale expansion.
Microsoft’s balance sheet may provide a competitive advantage as spending rises. However, the company also faces longer-term questions about whether increasingly capable AI agents could challenge parts of its productivity software business.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors will be watching Azure’s growth, the pace of infrastructure deployment and whether strong free cash flow can be sustained as Microsoft continues investing in AI. The company had forecast capital expenditure of $190 billion for 2026, making the timing of capacity deliveries and spending execution important factors in future results.
Microsoft’s latest performance suggests that demand for cloud and AI services remains robust. The key test will be whether that demand continues translating into durable earnings and cash generation as competition and infrastructure costs increase.
