Meta Platforms is expanding Instagram’s school partnership program in the United States as the social media company faces increasing scrutiny over the safety of younger users. The initiative combines new communication and community features with Meta’s broader efforts to address legal and regulatory concerns surrounding teenagers’ use of Facebook and Instagram.

Nearly 17,000 Schools Are Already Participating

Meta said nearly 17,000 schools have joined its Instagram school partnership program to date. The company is now creating a centralized hub for school-related accounts, with the aim of making school information and community engagement easier to organize within Instagram.

Verified students at participating schools will be able to access features including directories of clubs and sports teams, school-specific Stories and Notes for announcements. Meta is also introducing Channels and Notes for verified schools, allowing institutions to communicate with students, parents and the wider school community through the platform.

The changes represent an expansion of Instagram’s role beyond conventional social networking. By creating tools specifically for school communities, Meta is increasing the platform’s utility for institutional communication while also deepening its presence in an environment where younger users are already active.

Teen Safety Pressure Is Reshaping Meta’s Platform Strategy

The timing of the expansion is significant. Meta is facing growing scrutiny over the potential effects of its platforms on children and teenagers, with legal actions and regulatory initiatives placing greater emphasis on age verification, usage restrictions and safeguards for younger users.

In August, Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion over the next decade to resolve claims brought by US states alleging that Facebook and Instagram were designed to addict children. The agreement also includes restrictions on teenagers’ use of the platforms. Meta has not admitted wrongdoing in the settlement.

The company has separately faced significant litigation involving youth safety. In New Mexico, a court ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a teen mental health fund after an earlier jury award of $375 million, bringing the total related damages to $942 million. Meta has said it intends to appeal that ruling.

School Integration Creates Both Strategic and Regulatory Considerations

For Meta, expanding school partnerships creates a potentially valuable institutional use case for Instagram while the company works to demonstrate stronger safeguards for younger users. The initiative could also provide schools with a more structured way to distribute information, potentially increasing engagement with verified institutional accounts.

However, greater integration into school communities also increases the importance of privacy, age verification and platform governance. Meta has acknowledged that younger users can misrepresent their ages, while its latest settlement requires stronger measures to identify and restrict underage accounts.

For investors in Israel and global markets, Meta’s school strategy illustrates how youth-safety requirements are becoming an increasingly important factor in the economics and design of large social media platforms. The balance between expanding engagement and meeting stricter safety obligations will remain important as Meta implements its settlement commitments and faces continuing litigation. Investors will also monitor whether additional safeguards increase compliance costs, alter user engagement or influence how other major platforms structure services for teenagers and educational institutions.
