Intel Leads Semiconductor Rebound

Intel shares climbed 9% on Thursday, helping drive a powerful rebound across the semiconductor sector and pushing the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) more than 8% higher.

The rally followed a bullish upgrade from Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya, who raised Intel’s rating from Underperform to Buy while boosting his price target to $135 from $96.

The upgrade comes after a period of volatility in semiconductor stocks, as investors reassess opportunities across the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.

Bank of America Sees Major Growth Potential

Arya highlighted growing confidence in Intel’s ability to address industry bottlenecks related to advanced semiconductor manufacturing and packaging technologies.

The analyst also pointed to what he believes is a significantly larger long-term opportunity in the emerging market for agentic AI systems.

Unlike traditional AI applications that primarily focus on model training, agentic AI systems are designed to autonomously perform tasks, make decisions, and interact with software environments. These systems require substantial computing resources, creating new demand for powerful server CPUs.

According to Bank of America, Intel could capture approximately 25% of the server CPU market opportunity by 2030.

AI Infrastructure Story Is Expanding

For much of the AI boom, investor enthusiasm centered on graphics processing units, or GPUs, which remain critical for training and running large language models.

However, market attention has increasingly expanded to include the broader infrastructure ecosystem needed to support AI deployment at scale.

This includes:

Central Processing Units (CPUs)

CPUs manage many of the operational tasks performed by AI agents and enterprise applications.

Advanced Packaging

As chips become more powerful, sophisticated packaging technologies are becoming essential for maximizing performance and efficiency.

Data Center Infrastructure

Networking equipment, storage systems, cooling technologies, and power management solutions are all benefiting from growing AI investment.

Intel’s position across several of these categories has strengthened investor confidence in its long-term growth prospects.

Government Support Adds Momentum

Intel has also benefited from optimism surrounding government-backed initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

The company has invested heavily in expanding advanced manufacturing capabilities in the United States, positioning itself as a key player in efforts to reduce dependence on overseas chip production.

These investments are increasingly viewed as strategic assets as demand for AI hardware continues to accelerate.

Sector Rotation Continues

The upgrade arrives during a period of shifting market leadership.

After years of strong gains driven by AI-related infrastructure stocks, some investors have recently rotated into defensive and cyclical sectors following a pullback in technology shares.

Despite the recent volatility, semiconductors remain one of the strongest-performing sectors of 2026, supported by continued investment in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data center expansion.

Outlook

Bank of America’s upgrade reflects growing confidence that Intel can play a larger role in the next phase of the AI infrastructure cycle.

While competition remains intense, particularly from Nvidia and AMD, Intel’s strengths in CPUs, manufacturing, and advanced packaging could position the company to benefit from the expanding demand for AI-driven computing.

As AI adoption broadens beyond model training and into autonomous software agents, investors are increasingly recognizing that the future of artificial intelligence will require a far wider range of technologies than GPUs alone.
