Key Points

  • Bernstein says India’s large-cap companies face a structural challenge, with incumbent business models increasingly exposed to disruption from new technologies.
  • Foreign portfolio investors have withdrawn nearly ₹21,000 crore from Indian equities in September, reversing inflows recorded in July and August.
  • The outlook is increasingly tied to earnings growth, oil prices, global bond yields, the rupee and valuation differentials rather than foreign flows alone.

India’s equity market is entering a more selective phase as foreign investors reduce exposure while questions emerge over the ability of established large-cap companies to generate the next leg of earnings growth. Bernstein analysts have argued that some of India’s largest companies represent a “bygone economic era”, reflecting concerns that incumbent business models may be less aligned with emerging technology-driven growth.

Large Caps Face a Changing Growth Equation

Bernstein’s assessment focuses on a structural issue rather than a short-term market correction. According to the brokerage, large-cap companies have struggled to reinvent themselves while established business models face disruption from new technologies. At the same time, smaller and mid-cap companies may offer different growth opportunities but can be more difficult for large institutional investors to access at scale. Bernstein therefore argues that the case for a structural India allocation has become more complicated, even if the country’s long-term economic potential remains significant.

The earnings picture provides an additional layer to the debate. Analysts cited by Moneycontrol have noted that muted large-cap earnings growth over the past two years has contributed to India’s relative market performance, meaning foreign selling alone does not explain the weakness. At the same time, other research remains more constructive: J.P. Morgan said in September that earnings were beginning to recover, with large caps joining an improvement already visible in smaller companies.

Foreign Investors Reverse Recent Buying

Foreign portfolio flows have become an important market variable. Foreign investors withdrew nearly ₹21,000 crore from Indian equities in September after purchasing Indian stocks during July and August, according to recent Indian market reports. Elevated crude prices, higher U.S. bond yields and India’s valuation premium relative to other emerging markets have been identified as factors contributing to the renewed selling pressure.

The shift is occurring against a challenging global backdrop. Brent crude has remained above $100 per barrel, increasing pressure on India’s import bill, while higher global yields can make dollar-denominated assets comparatively more attractive. Reuters reported on September 22 that Indian equities were nevertheless able to post modest gains as oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields eased, illustrating how quickly the external macro backdrop can influence daily market sentiment.

What Could Bring Foreign Capital Back?

The outlook will likely depend on whether India can combine stronger earnings delivery with more favorable global liquidity conditions. Lower oil prices, greater rupee stability and evidence of sustained earnings improvement could reduce some of the pressure on foreign allocations. Conversely, persistent geopolitical risk, elevated energy costs, higher global yields or continued currency weakness could prolong investor caution.

For Israeli and global asset allocators, the Indian market therefore presents a more nuanced picture than a simple foreign-investor exit. The coming quarters may show whether large-cap companies can adapt to technological disruption and deliver stronger earnings while domestic institutional demand continues to provide market support. The balance between structural growth, valuations, earnings momentum and global macro conditions is likely to remain central to India’s equity-market outlook.
