Global markets delivered a mixed performance on September 22, with U.S. and European equities showing limited dispersion and Asian markets generally advancing where trading took place. In Tel Aviv, the major benchmarks produced a split session, with TA-35 and TA-125 gaining while TA-90 and several broader indicators declined.

Trading conditions were also shaped by regional holidays. The Sofia Stock Exchange was closed for Bulgaria’s Independence Day, while the Tokyo Stock Exchange was closed for a holiday. Attention now turns to September 23, when additional closures in Japan and Saudi Arabia will affect regional trading activity.

America: Canadian Equities Lead as U.S. Benchmarks Diverge

U.S. equity markets delivered a mixed session on September 22. The Nasdaq rose 0.45% to 27,244.28, while the S&P 500 was effectively unchanged at 7,764.64. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.36% to 51,863.70.

Outside the largest U.S. benchmarks, the Russell 2000 advanced 0.51% to 2,889.92, while Brazil’s IBOVESPA gained 0.44% to 187,422.92. Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite Index was the strongest major Americas equity benchmark supplied, rising 0.91% to 36,335.61.

The U.S. Dollar Index increased 0.10% to 100.70. The VIX stood at 14.21, down 4.44%.

The session therefore showed a clear divergence within U.S. equities, with technology-oriented stocks gaining while the Dow declined and the S&P 500 remained essentially flat.

Europe: Modest Gains in Continental Markets as FTSE 100 Slips

European equities were mixed on September 22. The CAC 40 rose 0.20% to 8,154.91, while the Euronext 100 gained 0.17% to 1,901.19. EURO STOXX 50 advanced 0.10% to 6,324.72, and Germany’s DAX increased 0.02% to 25,578.85.

Other European benchmarks moved lower. MSCI Europe declined 0.14% to 2,798.27, while the FTSE 100 fell 0.29% to 10,708.33.

Currency indexes also weakened. The British Pound Index declined 0.16% to 133.47, while the Euro Index fell 0.18% to 114.48.

The Sofia Stock Exchange was closed on September 22 for Bulgaria’s Independence Day, reducing the number of active European trading venues during the session.

Asia: Most Trading Markets Advance as Japan Remains Closed

Asian markets that traded on September 22 generally moved higher. The S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.30% to 8,757.80, while the Hang Seng gained 0.18% to 25,087.75. South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index advanced 0.15% to 7,017.91, and China’s SSE Composite Index increased 0.06% to 3,952.13.

India’s S&P BSE SENSEX declined 0.15% to 74,743.97. The Australian Dollar Index fell 0.06% to 71.21, while the Japanese Yen Index declined 0.27% to 63.58.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange was closed on September 22 for a holiday. As a result, the Nikkei 225 figure of 65,018.95 and its reported 1.38% change should not be treated as a September 22 Tokyo trading-session result.

Tel Aviv: TA-35 and TA-125 Gain in Mixed Session

Tel Aviv equities delivered a mixed performance on September 22. The TA-35 rose 0.41% to 4,307.75, while the TA-125 gained 0.21% to 4,173.28. The TA-90 declined 0.33% to 3,777.18, and the TA-SME60 fell 0.28% to 1,316.89.

The TA 90 and Banks index declined 0.61% to 4,028.56, while the TA-200 fell 0.10% to 4,003.37. The TA Sector-Balance index edged higher by 0.01% to 4,759.33, and the TA-20 gained 0.05% to 4,142.17.

The mixed session reflected uneven performance across domestic equity segments rather than a broad-based move in one direction.

Outlook for September 23: Regional Holidays and Macro Signals Shape Trading

September 23 will bring further regional exchange closures. The Tokyo Stock Exchange will be closed for the Autumn Equinox, while the Saudi Arabia Stock Exchange will be closed for National Day. These holidays may reduce liquidity and limit the availability of fresh price signals from the affected markets.

Open markets will focus on incoming economic data, central-bank expectations, inflation developments, corporate earnings and geopolitical risks. Currency and bond-market movements will remain important as investors assess interest-rate expectations and the broader growth outlook.

The mixed performance across U.S., European and Tel Aviv equities leaves market direction sensitive to new macroeconomic information and changes in risk appetite. With regional holidays affecting trading activity, investors will also monitor liquidity conditions and volatility as the September 23 session develops.
