Key Points
- Rate pause widely anticipated: The Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 3.75%–4.00%, with markets assigning approximately a 90% probability to an unchanged decision.
- Inflation remains persistent: Elevated oil prices, tariff-related costs, strong consumer spending and AI-related demand are contributing to inflation pressures that remain above the Fed’s 2% target.
- Future rate increases remain possible: Investors are focusing on the potential pace of additional tightening, with some economists anticipating multiple rate hikes if inflation continues to broaden across the economy.
Fed Prepares to Pause After September Rate Increase
The Federal Reserve is expected to leave interest rates unchanged on Wednesday as policymakers assess whether inflation will moderate or remain strong enough to require further monetary tightening.
The anticipated pause follows a quarter-percentage-point rate increase in September. Ahead of the latest two-day policy meeting, Fed officials signaled that the central bank could afford to wait for additional evidence before making its next move.
Markets were assigning approximately a 90% probability to an unchanged decision, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool. The benchmark rate is expected to remain within the 3.75%–4.00% range.
The decision comes less than a week before the November 3 US midterm elections, which will determine whether President Donald Trump’s Republican Party retains control of Congress or Democrats gain control of one or both legislative chambers.
Inflation Broadens Beyond Energy and Tariffs
Persistent inflation remains the central challenge for policymakers. Initial estimates indicate that the September Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, and related measures remained at annualized rates of 3% or higher, with limited progress in recent months.
The September PCE report is scheduled for release on Thursday, one day after the policy decision.
Energy prices have been a significant contributor to inflation pressures. The global benchmark oil price had climbed to approximately $114 per barrel, rising around 20% since the beginning of September. Diesel prices have also approached record highs, increasing costs across industries including agriculture, construction and transportation.
Tariff-related costs and strong consumer demand are adding to the challenge. AI investment has also emerged as a potential short-term source of inflationary pressure, even as productivity gains from the technology could benefit the economy over a longer period.
Policymakers are particularly concerned that inflation initially driven by specific supply shocks could spread more broadly through demand across the economy.
Markets Focus on the Scale of Future Tightening
Although a pause is widely anticipated, financial markets are increasingly focused on how many additional rate increases may be necessary to bring inflation toward the Fed’s 2% target.
Dario Perkins, managing director for global macro at TS Lombard, argued that persistent inflation could force the central bank into a series of further increases, particularly if the AI investment boom continues to support demand.
Derek Tang, an economist at Monetary Policy Analytics, said the breadth and persistence of inflation would remain central to the policy debate. His firm expects three additional quarter-percentage-point increases in upcoming meetings, broadly consistent with market expectations for quarterly hikes through June 2027.
These projections represent analysts’ expectations rather than confirmed Fed policy decisions.
Warsh Faces Questions Over the Policy Outlook
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is expected to face questions about how an unchanged rate decision fits with the central bank’s commitment to restoring inflation to 2%.
Warsh has previously emphasized the need to bring inflation back to target at a sufficient pace. A pause following stronger inflation data could therefore require careful communication to avoid signaling that policymakers are becoming less concerned about price pressures.
The policy statement is expected to offer limited explanation, leaving the chair’s press conference particularly important for understanding the committee’s assessment of inflation and the conditions that could trigger further tightening.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The Fed’s statement and Warsh’s press conference will provide important signals about the threshold for additional rate increases. Thursday’s PCE report should offer further evidence of whether inflation remains broad-based and persistent.
Oil prices, diesel costs, tariff effects and AI-related demand will remain key variables. If these pressures continue to feed into wider price increases, the case for further tightening could strengthen, affecting Treasury yields, equity valuations and financing costs across the economy.
