European markets delivered a mixed performance on October 5, 2026, with the FTSE 100 and major European currencies posting modest gains while several major equity benchmarks moved lower. The CAC 40 recorded the sharpest decline among the major indexes, falling 1.00% to 7,818.17.
The FTSE 100 edged 0.07% higher to 10,469.12, while the British Pound Index gained 0.32% to 132.39. The Euro Index also advanced slightly, rising 0.06% to 112.53.
Major European Equity Benchmarks Move Lower
The EURO STOXX 50 declined 0.26% to 6,222.17, matching the 0.26% decline in the Euronext 100 Index, which ended at 1,869.57.
MSCI Europe fell 0.18% to 2,707.50, while the DAX declined 0.20% to 25,179.74. The CAC 40 was the weakest major equity benchmark, dropping a full 1.00%.
The mixed performance followed the broad equity recovery recorded on October 2. While the FTSE 100 remained marginally positive, the broader European indexes gave back part of their recent gains.
European Currencies Strengthen
Currency markets moved modestly higher. The British Pound Index rose 0.32% to 132.39, recording the strongest percentage gain among the European indicators supplied. The Euro Index also increased, gaining 0.06% to 112.53.
The pound’s advance represented a recovery from its October 2 level of 131.97, while the euro moved slightly above 112.46.
The modest currency gains contrasted with the weakness across most European equity benchmarks.
Outlook
European markets began the week with a mixed performance, as the FTSE 100 and currencies gained while most major equity benchmarks declined. The CAC 40 recorded the largest equity loss at 1.00%, while the DAX, MSCI Europe, Euronext 100 and EURO STOXX 50 also moved lower.
