Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with Boeing to purchase 10 freighter aircraft, expanding its cargo fleet and strengthening its position as a logistics hub connecting Africa with markets across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. The order comes as demand for air cargo continues to grow, supported by international trade, e-commerce and ongoing changes in global supply chains.

Ethiopian Airlines Expands Its Cargo Fleet

The order includes eight Boeing 777-8 Freighters and two current-generation 777 Freighters. The two 777 Freighters are expected to be delivered in 2027 and 2028, while deliveries of the eight 777-8 Freighters are scheduled between 2033 and 2035.

Ethiopian Airlines is the first African airline to order the 777-8 Freighter. The aircraft is part of Boeing’s 777X family and is designed to provide cargo capacity and range that can support new routes for operators. Boeing says the aircraft has a maximum structural payload of 118 metric tons.

The airline currently operates a cargo fleet consisting of 12 777 Freighters, two 767 Freighters and four 737-800SF aircraft. The new order will give Ethiopian Airlines additional capacity and operational flexibility as it continues expanding its international cargo network.

Air Cargo Demand Supports Further Expansion

Ethiopian Airlines currently connects more than 70 cargo markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. The company is seeking to expand its international cargo operations as cross-border trade, e-commerce and changes in supply-chain structures continue to support demand for fast air connectivity.

The expansion of cargo operations is also linked to Ethiopia’s broader infrastructure plans. Ethiopian Airlines is involved in a $12.5 billion program to develop a new airport, with the first phase expected to open in 2030. The facility is planned as a major cargo hub for Africa and is expected to support the airline’s long-term growth.

Order Strengthens Boeing’s Relationship With Ethiopian Airlines

The order marks Ethiopian Airlines’ second purchase involving Boeing’s 777X family. The airline has already ordered eight 777-9 passenger aircraft, making it the first African customer for the new aircraft family. Combining its existing 777 Freighters with the next-generation 777-8 Freighter will allow Ethiopian Airlines to expand cargo capacity over time while maintaining an operating base centered on Boeing aircraft.

For Boeing, the order adds to demand for freighter aircraft at a time when the company continues to manage delays affecting the 777X program. For Ethiopian Airlines, the agreement provides a long-term foundation for expanding its cargo network. Investors will be watching aircraft delivery schedules, developments in air-freight demand and progress on the new airport project, which could influence the airline’s ability to increase its global cargo operations.
