Eni and BP are moving toward a final investment decision on Egypt’s recently discovered Denise West offshore gas field, with the partners targeting approval within the next few months. The development comes as Egypt seeks to strengthen its position in the Mediterranean gas market and expand the use of existing infrastructure to support regional energy flows.

Denise West Moves Toward Development

Italy’s Eni said on August 25 that it is working with BP and the Egyptian Petroleum Corporation to reach a final investment decision on Denise West. The field was discovered offshore Egypt in April, and Eni said production could begin in less than two years if development proceeds according to the current timetable.

The relatively short potential timeline between investment approval and first gas reflects the importance of existing offshore expertise and infrastructure in Egypt. For the companies involved, reaching a final investment decision will require further evaluation of development economics, project requirements and the commercial framework governing production. The Reuters report does not provide a specific capital expenditure figure for Denise West, meaning the financial scale of the project remains to be determined.

Egypt Strengthens Its Mediterranean Energy Role

The project also carries strategic significance for Egypt’s energy sector. Eni Chief Executive Claudio Descalzi discussed the development with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi during a meeting in Cairo, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi.

Egypt has established itself as an important regional gas and LNG hub, supported by offshore production and liquefaction infrastructure. The development of new fields could help reinforce that position while providing additional domestic gas supplies. For international energy companies, Egypt offers access to established infrastructure and proximity to European and Mediterranean markets, although project economics remain sensitive to gas prices, production costs and regional demand.

Cronos Links Egyptian Gas Infrastructure to Regional Supply

The discussions between Descalzi and President el-Sisi also covered Eni’s Cronos gas development in Cyprus’ offshore waters. Cronos is being developed with TotalEnergies and is expected to use Egypt’s Damietta LNG plant to liquefy the extracted gas.

This infrastructure connection is strategically important because it allows offshore Mediterranean gas resources to be processed through an established Egyptian LNG facility rather than requiring the development of an entirely new export system. Eni said the Cronos project will play a crucial role in developing Egypt’s status as a Mediterranean energy hub, linking resources from the wider region with existing processing and export capabilities.

Investors and energy-market participants will now watch the progress toward the final investment decision for Denise West, including any details on development costs, production capacity and timing. The potential arrival of first gas in less than two years could strengthen Egypt’s regional supply position, but the project’s ultimate contribution will depend on execution, infrastructure availability and broader Mediterranean gas-market conditions. Progress on Cronos and the use of Damietta LNG will also be important indicators of how effectively Egypt can integrate offshore discoveries into a wider regional energy network.
