Key Points
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed more than 450 points to a new record high as investors welcomed strong corporate earnings and optimism surrounding a potential U.S.-Iran agreement.
- Disney and Eli Lilly led gains after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results, while more than 84% of S&P 500 companies have exceeded earnings expectations this season.
- Investor sentiment improved despite weak U.S. private payroll data, while hopes of reopening the Strait of Hormuz helped stabilize oil prices.
Wall Street extended its powerful rally on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching another all-time high as investors responded positively to another round of strong corporate earnings and growing optimism that diplomatic negotiations could restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Dow gained approximately 485 points, or 0.9%, while the S&P 500 also reached a new record high with a modest advance. The Nasdaq Composite traded near unchanged after recovering from earlier fluctuations driven by mixed technology earnings.
The latest gains follow Tuesday’s historic session, during which the S&P 500 closed above 7,700 for the first time and the Dow surged more than 900 points to another record close. Over the past week, the Dow and S&P 500 have each gained nearly 6%, while the Nasdaq has advanced almost 9%.
Strong Earnings Continue to Support Equities
Corporate earnings remained the primary driver of market momentum as companies continued to outperform Wall Street expectations.
Dow component Disney rose more than 2% after delivering stronger-than-expected fiscal third-quarter earnings, reflecting continued strength across its entertainment and streaming businesses.
Healthcare giant Eli Lilly climbed 7% after reporting second-quarter earnings and revenue that exceeded analyst estimates, adding further support to the broader market.
According to FactSet, more than 84% of S&P 500 companies that have reported second-quarter results have beaten earnings expectations, reinforcing confidence in corporate profitability despite ongoing economic uncertainties.
Oil Stabilizes as Iran Negotiations Progress
Energy markets remained relatively stable after sharp declines earlier in the week.
West Texas Intermediate crude traded near $75 per barrel, while Brent crude rose about 1% to approximately $80 per barrel.
Investor sentiment improved after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that negotiations between the United States and Iran were progressing toward a potential agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns about global energy supply disruptions.
Technology Stocks Deliver Mixed Performance
Technology shares produced mixed results despite continued enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence.
Advanced Micro Devices declined about 4% after reporting adjusted earnings that only narrowly exceeded analyst expectations.
SpaceX shares plunged 12% after investors reacted negatively to the company’s first quarterly earnings report as a public company. Although the company exceeded earnings expectations, investors were concerned by a sixfold increase in capital expenditures to $18.4 billion, primarily directed toward AI infrastructure investments.
Meanwhile, Nvidia gained approximately 4% after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the company intends to rely exclusively on Nvidia processors for its future artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.
Musk described Nvidia as providing “the best AI computer,” reinforcing Nvidia’s dominant position within the rapidly expanding AI hardware market.
Investors Look Beyond Weak Labor Data
Markets largely ignored weaker-than-expected employment data released Wednesday.
The ADP National Employment Report showed private-sector payrolls increased by just 44,000 jobs in July, falling below both June’s revised figure of 95,000 and economists’ expectations for 75,000 new jobs.
Despite the softer labor report, investors remained focused on strong corporate earnings, easing geopolitical tensions, and continued optimism surrounding artificial intelligence investments.

Closing Insights
Wall Street’s latest record-setting rally reflects growing investor confidence that resilient corporate earnings and easing geopolitical tensions can offset concerns surrounding economic growth and labor market softness. With earnings continuing to outperform expectations and diplomatic efforts potentially reducing energy market risks, investor attention is likely to remain focused on whether companies can sustain strong profit growth while navigating an evolving macroeconomic environment.
