Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has reportedly completed a funding round exceeding 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion), according to The Information.

The transaction values the company at more than $50 billion, making it one of the largest private AI companies in China and one of the most valuable AI startups globally.

The fundraising marks DeepSeek’s first major external capital raise following its rapid rise to prominence in the global AI industry.

Unusual Structure Preserves Founder Control

What makes the transaction particularly noteworthy is its unconventional structure.

Rather than investing directly into DeepSeek, most investors reportedly placed their capital into a limited partnership managed by founder and CEO Liang Wenfeng.

Under the arrangement, investors do not receive voting rights and are subject to a five-year lock-up period, significantly limiting their ability to influence corporate decisions or exit their positions.

The structure enables Liang to maintain substantial control over the company’s strategic direction while still accessing significant external capital.

State-Backed Investor Receives Special Treatment

According to the report, China’s National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund is the sole exception to the arrangement.

The state-backed fund reportedly invested directly into DeepSeek rather than through the limited partnership structure.

As a result, it retains voting rights and is not subject to the same lock-up restrictions imposed on other investors.

The exception highlights Beijing’s strategic interest in supporting domestic AI leaders as China seeks greater technological self-sufficiency.

Major Chinese Investors Participating

Previous reports indicated that Liang planned to contribute approximately 20 billion yuan of his own capital to the financing round.

Several major Chinese corporations have also been linked to the fundraising.

Technology giant Tencent Holdings was reportedly considering an investment of 10 billion yuan, while battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited was evaluating a commitment of approximately 5 billion yuan.

If completed at those levels, the companies would rank among DeepSeek’s largest external investors.

Rise of China’s AI Champion

DeepSeek became one of the most closely watched AI companies globally after releasing its V3 and R1 models.

The models attracted significant attention from researchers, investors, and technology executives by demonstrating advanced capabilities while reportedly operating with fewer resources than many Western competitors.

Its emergence challenged long-held assumptions that leading-edge AI development remained concentrated primarily within the United States.

The company’s success has positioned it as a national champion within China’s broader effort to compete with American AI leaders.

Strategic Significance

The funding round comes as competition between Chinese and U.S. AI companies intensifies.

Large-scale capital commitments have become increasingly important as companies race to secure computing infrastructure, recruit talent, train advanced models, and build commercial ecosystems around AI technologies.

DeepSeek’s ability to raise more than $7 billion demonstrates both investor confidence in its technology and China’s willingness to support domestic AI innovation at scale.

Outlook

The new capital is expected to strengthen DeepSeek’s ability to expand computing capacity, accelerate model development, and compete against leading global AI firms.

The founder-controlled structure suggests Liang intends to prioritize long-term strategic goals over short-term investor influence, a model that resembles governance structures used by several high-profile technology companies worldwide.

As AI competition continues to accelerate, DeepSeek’s combination of substantial funding, government support, and operational control may position it as one of the most important challengers to Western AI leaders over the coming years.
