Key Points
- Nvidia’s forward valuation has fallen below 17 times earnings, roughly half its 2025 multiple and sharply below the more than 25-times level recorded as recently as May.
- The valuation decline contrasts with expectations for another year of exceptional growth, with revenue and net income each projected to increase by roughly 90% or more in the current fiscal year.
- Margin pressure and intensifying competition are emerging concerns, particularly as higher memory costs weigh on profitability and major customers develop their own AI chips.
Nvidia’s Valuation Has Fallen Despite Strong Growth
Nvidia’s stock is trading at one of its lowest valuation levels in more than a decade, creating an unusual contrast between the company’s expected financial growth and the price investors are currently willing to pay for those earnings. The stock’s forward earnings multiple has dropped below 17 times, representing roughly half the valuation level seen in 2025.
The compression has been particularly rapid. Nvidia was trading above 25 times expected earnings as recently as May, but the multiple has since contracted substantially even as analysts continue to forecast significant increases in revenue and profitability.
Investors Are Questioning the Durability of AI Growth
The lower valuation suggests that investors may be placing greater emphasis on the sustainability of Nvidia’s earnings rather than simply the pace of its current expansion. The company remains deeply connected to the global AI infrastructure buildout, but expectations surrounding that spending cycle have become more demanding.
Nvidia’s shares have gained about 22% so far in 2026, but that advance looks relatively modest compared with the broader semiconductor sector. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index has risen nearly 76%, while Intel and Advanced Micro Devices have each more than tripled. Nvidia is therefore near the lower end of the index’s performance ranking despite the semiconductor index itself trading at about 20 times forward earnings.
Margins Face Pressure From Rising Component Costs
Profitability represents another factor behind the changing valuation. Nvidia reported a gross margin of 75% in its most recent quarter, but analyst estimates indicate that the figure could fall below 72% by the fourth quarter before recovering later.
Higher costs for critical components, particularly memory chips, are contributing to the expected margin compression. For a company whose valuation has historically reflected exceptional profitability and growth, even temporary pressure on margins can influence how investors assess the sustainability of future earnings.
Customer Chip Development Creates Another Challenge
Competition is also becoming more relevant to Nvidia’s long-term outlook. Major customers including Meta Platforms and Alphabet have been developing AI chips internally, raising questions about how much of their future computing requirements will continue to depend on Nvidia’s products.
The development of customer-designed silicon could gradually affect Nvidia’s pricing power and market share if internal alternatives become increasingly capable. That possibility is particularly important because the company’s valuation ultimately depends not only on the size of the AI market but also on its ability to maintain a strong competitive position within it.
Strong Earnings Have Not Eliminated Investor Skepticism
Nvidia’s recent financial performance remains powerful. The stock gained roughly 7% following its second-quarter earnings release, when revenue more than doubled and the company projected 70% revenue growth in fiscal 2028, well above the 45% growth analysts had expected at that time.
Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has pushed back against the market’s valuation assessment, describing Nvidia as the “world’s first and only growth value stock” and arguing that the company is “incredibly misunderstood.” The contrasting views highlight the central question surrounding the shares: whether today’s lower multiple represents a more reasonable valuation or reflects growing concerns about the durability of the AI investment cycle.
What Investors May Watch Next
The next phase of Nvidia’s stock performance will likely depend on whether exceptional earnings growth can continue while margins stabilize and competitive threats remain manageable. Investors may focus on AI infrastructure spending, gross-margin trends, customer adoption of internally developed chips and the company’s forward earnings outlook. The combination of rapid profit growth and a compressed valuation leaves the market increasingly focused on how sustainable Nvidia’s AI leadership can be.
