Key Points

  • Apple’s iPhone business generated $54.25 billion in quarterly revenue, nearly half of total company sales, increasing its exposure to rising memory costs.
  • AI data centers are absorbing more global chip capacity, pushing some smartphone-memory prices to more than four times previous levels.
  • Apple’s purchasing power and premium pricing provide protection, but prolonged memory shortages could pressure margins through 2027 and beyond.

Why Is AI Creating a Memory Problem for Apple?

Apple’s iPhone business is facing an increasingly important supply-chain challenge as the explosive expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure redirects semiconductor capacity toward higher-value memory products. The issue is particularly relevant for Apple because the iPhone remains the company’s largest revenue engine, generating $54.25 billion in its latest reported quarter, or 49.6% of total sales.

The memory market is highly concentrated, with Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron controlling roughly 90% of global supply. As AI data centers demand increasingly large volumes of high-bandwidth memory, manufacturers have a financial incentive to allocate scarce wafer capacity toward those products. That leaves smartphone manufacturers competing for conventional DRAM at a time when available supply is becoming tighter.

The result has already appeared in pricing. Some smartphone-memory components have reportedly increased by more than fourfold, while meaningful supply relief may not arrive until late 2027 or even 2028.

Can Apple Protect Its iPhone Margins?

Apple has advantages that smaller smartphone manufacturers do not. Its enormous purchasing volumes provide negotiating leverage with suppliers, while its premium product portfolio gives management more flexibility to absorb higher component costs or pass some increases on to consumers.

However, purchasing power cannot instantly create additional semiconductor manufacturing capacity. Even Apple’s scale cannot eliminate the underlying supply constraint if memory producers continue prioritizing AI-related demand.

That creates an important margin question. Apple reported a companywide gross margin of 50.1% in its latest quarter, giving the business substantial financial cushioning. But maintaining that profitability becomes more difficult if memory inflation persists for multiple product cycles.

Premium models could provide part of the answer. If consumers remain willing to pay more for upgraded iPhones, Apple may be able to offset higher memory costs through a higher average selling price. The risk is that increasingly expensive upgrades could eventually weaken replacement demand, particularly if consumers perceive fewer meaningful improvements between generations.

Could the AI Boom Become an iPhone Profitability Risk?

The unusual nature of the current semiconductor cycle makes this more than a conventional component-cost problem. AI companies and data-center operators have significantly deeper spending capacity than many traditional electronics customers, allowing them to compete aggressively for scarce memory resources.

For Apple, the challenge is therefore balancing supply security against profitability. Its purchasing scale should help, but prolonged shortages could force the company to pay more for critical components or make strategic decisions about product configurations and inventory.

Apple shares last closed at $319.97 because US markets were closed Monday. At that level, investors appear to be pricing in considerable confidence in the company’s ability to defend its earnings power. The shares also stand above the cited GF Value estimate of $284.79, suggesting expectations are already elevated.

The next several quarters will reveal whether Apple can preserve those expectations. If memory supply improves as new capacity comes online, the current squeeze could prove manageable. If AI demand continues overwhelming conventional semiconductor supply, however, the iPhone’s enormous revenue contribution could become a growing source of earnings pressure rather than an automatic strength.
