Key Points
- AMD surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time after its shares jumped 9% to a record intraday high of $613.92.
- The stock has gained about 24% in five sessions, extending a broader 2026 rally that has lifted AMD shares more than 180%.
- AI infrastructure remains the central growth driver, with AMD’s Data Center revenue surging 107% year over year in the second quarter.
AMD Crosses a Major Market-Cap Threshold
Advanced Micro Devices reached a new milestone on Monday as its market value briefly moved above $1 trillion. The semiconductor company’s shares surged 9%, reaching an intraday record of $613.92 and pushing its market capitalization beyond the trillion-dollar threshold for the first time.
The move extends a powerful short-term rally. AMD has now recorded five consecutive sessions of gains, with the stock climbing roughly 24% during that period. Across the broader year, the shares have risen more than 180%, highlighting the scale of investor enthusiasm surrounding the company’s position in the artificial intelligence semiconductor market.
Data Center Growth Is Driving the Rally
AMD’s recent performance is closely tied to accelerating demand for AI computing infrastructure. The company reported second-quarter revenue of $11.54 billion, representing 50% growth from $7.69 billion a year earlier.
The Data Center business was particularly important, generating $6.7 billion in sales and growing 107% from the same period a year earlier. The performance demonstrates how demand for processors and accelerators used in data-center infrastructure has become an increasingly important component of AMD’s growth story.
For investors, the key question is whether this momentum can continue as global spending on AI infrastructure expands. The current rally suggests markets are placing significant weight on the possibility that demand for computing capacity will remain strong.
AMD Still Faces a Huge Nvidia Gap
Despite its rapid appreciation, AMD remains substantially smaller than Nvidia. Nvidia’s market capitalization stands at approximately $5.4 trillion, leaving a considerable valuation gap between the two leading AI chip companies.
The comparison also illustrates how large the AI semiconductor opportunity has become. AMD’s rise above $1 trillion does not simply reflect broader technology-sector strength; it reflects expectations that multiple chip suppliers can benefit from the expansion of AI infrastructure and increasingly sophisticated computing workloads.
AI Infrastructure Demand Remains Central
The broader AI buildout continues to provide an important backdrop for semiconductor stocks. AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company expects to double Data Center sales in 2027, reinforcing expectations for continued expansion in its largest growth engine.
At the same time, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has indicated that his company expects to double the number of chips it sells next year. Together, those expectations point to continued strength in demand for AI computing infrastructure, even as concerns grow around data-center expansion and the safety of large language models.
What Investors May Watch Next
AMD’s move above $1 trillion places greater attention on whether its accelerating Data Center business can support the stock’s dramatically higher valuation. Sustained AI infrastructure spending could provide another leg of growth, while any slowdown in chip demand or pressure on technology valuations could challenge the rally. The company’s ability to deliver on its projected Data Center expansion will therefore remain a central factor for investors assessing its next phase.
