Key Points
- Okta shares have more than doubled in 2026 as investors respond to stronger operating results and growing demand for identity security.
- The rapid adoption of AI agents could create a new growth opportunity as companies seek to manage identities, permissions and security controls for autonomous software.
- Strong cash generation, improving enterprise demand and higher analyst targets are strengthening the investment case, although expectations are also rising with the stock.
Okta’s Rally Has Changed the Investment Story
Okta has emerged as a major beneficiary of the growing focus on identity security, with its shares roughly doubling year to date in 2026. The latest acceleration followed the company’s fiscal second-quarter results on Aug. 26, when investors responded to better-than-expected performance, stronger enterprise demand and an upgraded outlook.
The stock has moved toward approximately $173, a dramatic recovery from its 52-week low near $63. That performance has shifted the central question for investors. Rather than simply asking whether Okta can stabilize its traditional identity business, the market is increasingly evaluating how much additional growth could come from securing AI-driven digital workers.
That distinction could prove important as businesses move artificial intelligence from experimental applications into operational workflows. The more deeply these systems become embedded in corporate environments, the greater the need to control their access and activity.
AI Agents Create a New Identity Security Market
AI agents introduce a different security challenge because they can operate autonomously while accessing systems, data and applications. Companies need to know which agents exist, what permissions they have and what actions they are authorized to perform. Okta is positioning its platform to address those requirements alongside the identities of employees, customers and other non-human systems.
The company has expanded beyond traditional authentication with products focused on identity governance and agent security. Its acquisition of Permiso Security has also strengthened its capabilities around identity threat protection and risk remediation across the identity lifecycle.
This could become strategically valuable if the number of AI agents deployed throughout businesses grows rapidly. Okta’s opportunity is to become an identity control layer spanning people, machines and autonomous software rather than remaining primarily associated with workforce authentication.
Strong Financial Results Support the AI Growth Narrative
Okta’s fiscal second-quarter performance provides evidence that the AI opportunity is developing alongside a healthy core business. Revenue increased 11% year over year to $805 million, while subscription revenue rose 12% to $793 million. Remaining performance obligations reached $4.858 billion, an increase of 17%, with current RPO climbing 14% to $2.585 billion.
Cash generation was also significant. The company produced $234 million in operating cash flow and $227 million in free cash flow during the quarter, giving management substantial financial flexibility as it continues investing in newer product categories.
Okta expects fiscal 2027 revenue of approximately $3.216 billion to $3.226 billion. Meanwhile, analyst sentiment has strengthened, with Needham lifting its price target to $200 from $140. Goldman Sachs has a $203 target, while the average target among 43 analysts is around $177.
The challenge is that the stock’s extraordinary advance has already incorporated considerable optimism. For OKTA to sustain another major move, investors will likely want evidence that AI-agent security is translating into faster revenue growth, larger enterprise contracts and broader adoption. If those indicators emerge, the company could gain a larger role in the emerging agentic enterprise. If growth remains closer to current levels, the elevated valuation could leave less room for disappointment.
