Key Points
- The Canadian dollar weakened to a one-week low as renewed trade tensions with the United States raised concerns over exports, investment, and economic growth.
- The loonie fell 0.4% to 1.3885 Canadian dollars per U.S. dollar after Washington imposed new 50% tariffs on Canadian imports and Ottawa announced retaliatory measures.
- Investors are watching upcoming Canadian GDP data and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech for further signals on currency direction.
The Canadian dollar weakened on Wednesday as renewed trade tensions with the United States and a stronger U.S. dollar weighed on market sentiment. The currency decline reflects growing concerns that higher tariffs could pressure Canada’s export sector, business confidence, and broader economic momentum at a time when global markets are closely monitoring monetary policy developments.
Trade Dispute Revives Concerns Over Canada’s Economic Growth
The Canadian dollar traded 0.4% lower at 1.3885 per U.S. dollar, equivalent to 72.02 U.S. cents, after reaching its weakest intraday level since August 19 at 1.3892. The move came as investors reassessed the economic impact of escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States.
The United States recently imposed new 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian imports after negotiations between the two countries failed. Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs on a similar value of U.S. goods while introducing support measures for affected businesses and workers.
Market participants have become increasingly concerned that prolonged trade uncertainty could weaken Canadian exports, reduce corporate investment, and negatively affect business confidence. According to Kevin Ford, FX and macro strategist at Convera, the dispute has limited the currency’s recent recovery by increasing uncertainty around Canada’s economic outlook.
U.S. Dollar Strength and Federal Reserve Expectations Influence Currency Markets
The U.S. dollar gained against a basket of major currencies following inflation data that slightly increased expectations of a possible Federal Reserve rate hike. The market reaction added additional pressure on the Canadian dollar, which often moves closely with changes in U.S. monetary policy and global risk sentiment.
Investors are now focused on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s upcoming speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium. A more hawkish message from the central bank could provide additional support for the U.S. dollar and potentially push the USD-CAD exchange rate above the 1.39 level.
However, analysts noted that Warsh may continue using cautious communication, leaving markets dependent on future economic data. The upcoming Canadian second-quarter GDP report will provide an important test of whether the economy maintained enough momentum before the latest tariff-related pressures emerged.
Oil Prices and Domestic Economic Data Add Additional Market Signals
Canada’s currency is also influenced by developments in commodity markets, particularly oil, one of the country’s major exports. Oil prices edged lower as investors focused on diplomatic discussions between Iran and Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz, while uncertainty remained around shipping activity in the key energy corridor.
U.S. crude oil futures traded 0.1% lower at $82.27 per barrel, limiting support for the Canadian dollar. A sustained decline in energy prices could create additional challenges for Canada’s export revenues and currency performance.
Canadian government bond yields moved higher across the curve, with the 10-year yield rising four basis points to 3.662% after earlier touching a near two-week low of 3.614%. The movement reflected shifting expectations around economic growth, inflation, and central bank policy.
Going forward, investors will monitor the release of Canada’s second-quarter GDP data, expected to show annualized growth of 3.4%, as well as developments in the U.S.-Canada trade dispute. The direction of Federal Reserve policy, commodity prices, and the ability of Canada’s economy to withstand tariff pressures will remain key factors shaping the outlook for the Canadian dollar.
