Nvidia shares extended their recent advance on Friday, bringing the semiconductor giant close to its all-time closing high as investors continued to favor companies positioned to benefit from the expansion of artificial intelligence. The latest move reflects more than momentum in the broader AI trade: Nvidia is increasingly using acquisitions, strategic investments and partnerships to strengthen its position across the technology stack.

Why Is Nvidia Stock Approaching a Record?

Nvidia gained as much as 2% during Friday’s session, leaving the stock only a few dollars below its May 14 closing record of $235.74. The advance followed gains in other AI-related stocks and came as investors assessed several developments that could reinforce Nvidia’s long-term role in the AI economy.

One catalyst was renewed attention surrounding Anthropic, which is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering. Nvidia is an investor in the AI developer and committed up to $10 billion to the company last year. A potential public-market debut could increase visibility around the value of leading AI developers and indirectly highlight Nvidia’s strategic exposure to the sector.

How Does Hugging Face Expand Nvidia’s AI Strategy?

Nvidia also confirmed the acquisition of Hugging Face, an open-weight AI model platform, for nearly $13 billion. The transaction gives Nvidia a deeper connection to a large community of developers, enterprises and AI model creators.

According to Nvidia, more than 18 million developers and creators and 200,000 companies use Hugging Face to share and adopt AI models. The acquisition therefore extends Nvidia’s ambitions beyond processors and into the software and developer ecosystem that increasingly determines how AI technologies are built and deployed.

The strategic logic is significant. Greater access to developers and enterprises can create additional opportunities for Nvidia to influence the infrastructure, platforms and tools used to develop AI applications, strengthening its position as the industry evolves.

Could Custom AI Chips Become Nvidia’s Next Growth Engine?

Nvidia’s strategy is also expanding toward custom silicon, an area becoming increasingly important as major cloud providers seek greater control over AI infrastructure. On Monday, the company announced a $3.5 billion investment in Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek, which plans to use Nvidia’s NVFusion platform for custom accelerator chips.

That move could help Nvidia participate in an expanding market without requiring every AI workload to run entirely on its own standard processors. As hyperscalers develop specialized chips, Nvidia’s ability to provide technology and platforms for that ecosystem could create another revenue channel.

For investors, the stock’s approach toward its previous record therefore reflects a broader question: whether Nvidia can continue converting its dominance in AI infrastructure into a wider ecosystem advantage. Continued AI spending, strategic investments and successful integration of acquisitions could support further upside, while elevated expectations leave little room for execution missteps.
