Key Points
- Gold's 2026 forecast was cut for a second consecutive quarter, with analysts now expecting an average price of $4,495 per troy ounce.
- High Treasury yields and a strong U.S. dollar are weighing on gold as markets anticipate interest rates will remain elevated for longer.
- Central-bank demand continues to provide support, while analysts expect gold prices to recover in 2027 with a median forecast of $4,650 per ounce.
Gold’s outlook is facing renewed pressure from elevated Treasury yields and a strong U.S. dollar, prompting analysts to reduce their 2026 price forecasts for the second consecutive quarter. Yet the precious metal continues to receive structural support from central-bank demand, leaving the longer-term outlook more balanced as markets assess the path of interest rates and global monetary conditions.
Higher Yields Weigh on the Gold Outlook
A Reuters survey of 30 analysts and traders conducted over the past three weeks produced a median gold price forecast of $4,495 per troy ounce for 2026, down from $4,509 in the previous quarterly survey. The revision reflects growing expectations that U.S. interest rates could remain higher for longer, creating a less favorable environment for an asset that does not generate interest income.
Higher Treasury yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, particularly when investors can obtain stronger returns from interest-bearing assets. At the same time, a stronger U.S. dollar can make dollar-denominated gold more expensive for international buyers, potentially limiting demand and placing additional pressure on prices.
Central Banks Provide a Structural Support
Despite these headwinds, the gold market continues to benefit from central-bank demand, which has become an important source of support for the precious metal. Official-sector purchases can provide a longer-term demand base that is less directly tied to short-term movements in bond yields or currency markets.
This dynamic creates a more complex market balance. While monetary conditions may remain restrictive, continued central-bank interest can help cushion periods of weaker private-sector demand. For global investors, the interaction between official-sector purchases, currency movements and real interest-rate expectations remains central to understanding whether gold can maintain elevated price levels.
Silver Faces a Different 2027 Path
The Reuters survey also points to a notable outlook for silver. Analysts expect silver to average $70.30 per ounce in 2026, followed by a lower median forecast of $66.75 in 2027. The differing trajectory highlights that precious metals are not necessarily moving in lockstep and can respond differently to monetary conditions, industrial demand and market positioning.
Gold’s forecast, meanwhile, suggests a potential recovery in 2027, with the median expectation rising to $4,650 per ounce. That outlook indicates that analysts see the current pressures from yields and the dollar as potentially moderating over the longer term, although the survey does not establish when or how those conditions will change.
Rates, the Dollar and Official Demand Remain Key Variables
The next phase of the gold market will depend heavily on the direction of U.S. monetary policy. A sustained period of elevated yields and dollar strength could continue to constrain prices, while a shift toward lower rates or a weaker dollar could improve the relative appeal of gold. Central-bank purchasing will remain another important variable, particularly if official demand continues to provide a cushion against financial-market volatility.
For global markets, the balance between interest rates, Treasury yields, dollar strength and central-bank buying will therefore remain critical. The revised 2026 forecast signals greater caution in the near term, while the higher 2027 projection suggests analysts continue to see potential for gold to regain momentum if monetary and currency headwinds eventually ease.
