Key Points
- Brent crude climbed back above $90 per barrel after President Donald Trump warned the U.S. would respond forcefully to Iran following an attempted missile attack on American forces.
- The renewed escalation ended a brief period of optimism over possible diplomatic progress, reigniting concerns about disruptions to Middle East oil exports.
- Analysts caution that continued threats to the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea shipping routes could tighten global energy supplies and keep oil prices elevated.
Global oil prices rebounded sharply after President Donald Trump warned that the United States would respond forcefully to an attempted Iranian missile attack on American forces, reigniting fears that escalating conflict in the Middle East could further disrupt global crude supplies.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 7.9% to settle at $90.74 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed 6.6% to $84.46 per barrel, reversing losses recorded earlier in the week when hopes for renewed diplomacy briefly eased market concerns.
Missile Attack Sparks New Escalation
The latest surge followed reports that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles targeting U.S. forces stationed in Jordan.
According to U.S. Central Command, the missiles were successfully intercepted before reaching their targets.
Following the attack, President Trump stated that Iran “is going to get a beating” and indicated the United States would respond with significant military action, signaling another escalation in a conflict that has already disrupted regional stability for months.
Diplomatic Hopes Fade
Earlier in the week, oil prices had retreated as markets anticipated renewed ceasefire discussions and a possible easing of hostilities.
Those expectations quickly faded after the latest military developments.
Market participants now view the possibility of a near-term diplomatic breakthrough as increasingly uncertain, particularly given ongoing disputes surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and regional security issues.
Regional Energy Infrastructure Remains Under Pressure
The conflict has expanded beyond direct exchanges between the United States and Iran.
Iran-backed militias in Iraq reportedly launched drone attacks against Saudi Arabian oil facilities, prompting joint retaliatory strikes by U.S. and Saudi forces.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Saudi pipeline infrastructure leading to the Red Sea export terminal at Yanbu.
These developments add to existing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where repeated attacks on commercial oil tankers have already complicated global energy shipments.
Critical Shipping Routes Face Growing Risks
The Strait of Hormuz and the southern Red Sea remain two of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors for crude oil exports.
Iranian actions in Hormuz, combined with Houthi operations in the Red Sea, have increased uncertainty over the reliability of energy transportation through the region.
Any prolonged disruption could significantly reduce available global oil supplies and increase transportation costs for energy producers.
Analysts See Continued Support for Higher Oil Prices
Commodity analysts remain cautious despite intermittent hopes for diplomatic progress.
Market observers note that reduced oil flows from the Middle East, combined with declining global inventories and shipping disruptions, continue to create a fundamentally supportive environment for higher crude prices.
While negotiations remain possible, energy markets are increasingly pricing in the risk that geopolitical tensions could persist for an extended period.
Outlook
Oil markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments across the Middle East. Although diplomatic efforts periodically generate optimism, repeated military confrontations continue to reinforce concerns over supply security. As long as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea remains vulnerable to disruption, crude prices are likely to remain volatile, with geopolitical headlines continuing to drive short-term market direction.
