Key Points
- ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) held approximately $1.65 billion in net assets as of September 10, 2026, providing bitcoin-linked exposure through futures and swaps rather than direct ownership of bitcoin.
- BITO’s NAV was $10.36 on September 10, while its year-to-date NAV total return stood at -11.74% through August 31.
- The fund carries a 0.95% expense ratio and distributes futures-related gains monthly when available, creating a different return profile from spot bitcoin ETFs.
Bitcoin exposure through traditional brokerage accounts has expanded rapidly, but ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF remains structurally different from the newer spot bitcoin ETFs. BITO uses bitcoin futures and swaps rather than holding bitcoin directly, making its performance dependent not only on bitcoin prices but also on futures-market conditions, roll costs and the broader interest-rate environment.
BITO Offers Futures-Based Bitcoin Exposure
BITO launched on October 18, 2021 and was the first U.S. bitcoin-linked ETF. The fund trades under the ticker BITO and is designed to target the performance of bitcoin through futures contracts and swaps. Unlike spot bitcoin ETFs, BITO does not directly invest in bitcoin and therefore does not require direct cryptocurrency custody.
As of September 10, BITO had approximately $1.65 billion in net assets, a NAV of $10.36 and trading volume of more than 64 million shares. Its expense ratio stands at 0.95%. The portfolio was primarily concentrated in CME bitcoin futures, with additional exposure through Coinbase bitcoin futures and a bitcoin futures daily-roll swap.
Performance Shows the Cost of a Volatile Bitcoin Market
BITO’s performance has reflected the difficult trading environment for bitcoin during 2026. Through August 31, the fund’s NAV total return was -11.74% year to date, while the market-price return was -11.81%. Over the previous 12 months, the NAV total return stood at -29.45%.
The difference between BITO and spot bitcoin products is particularly important during volatile markets. Futures-based exposure can diverge from the performance of bitcoin itself because of futures pricing, contract roll activity and the cost or benefit of maintaining exposure through derivatives. This means bitcoin’s direction remains the dominant factor, but it is not the only driver of returns.
Monthly Distributions Add Another Dimension
BITO also has a distinctive distribution structure. The fund distributes futures-related gains monthly when available, rather than relying on dividends generated by an underlying stock portfolio. As of July 31, its reported 12-month yield was 61.68%, although distributions can vary significantly from month to month and may be zero in some periods.
That structure makes BITO relevant to investors evaluating bitcoin exposure alongside cash-flow considerations, but it also makes headline yield figures difficult to compare directly with conventional income-oriented ETFs. The underlying source of the distributions is linked to the fund’s derivatives strategy rather than an operating business generating traditional earnings.
Going forward, BITO’s performance will depend on bitcoin’s price direction, futures-market conditions, liquidity and broader macroeconomic factors such as interest rates and the U.S. dollar. Investors will also be watching whether the shift toward spot bitcoin products continues to reduce demand for futures-based exposure. BITO’s large trading volumes and established position in the market remain significant, but its structure means that its long-term results can differ materially from simply holding bitcoin.
