Key Points
- Nikkei 225 jumped 1.94% to 66,753.72, leading Asian equity markets higher and recovering strongly from the previous session.
- S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.92% to 8,789.30, while Hang Seng and SSE Composite also advanced as regional risk appetite improved.
- Five of the six equity benchmarks posted gains, although KOSPI fell 0.48% and the Australian Dollar Index declined 0.49%.
Asian equities finished September 30 with a broadly positive tone, led by a sharp rebound in Japan and supported by gains across Australia, Hong Kong and mainland China. The Nikkei 225 was the strongest performer among the region’s major benchmarks, rising 1.94% to 66,753.72. The move marked a notable recovery after the index declined 0.60% on September 29.
Japan Leads Regional Advance
Japan was the clear driver of Wednesday’s regional performance. The Nikkei 225 climbed 1,271.45 points to 66,753.72, placing the benchmark comfortably above the 66,000 level. The 1.94% advance also represented a significant reversal from the previous session’s decline.
The Japanese Yen Index was little changed, rising 0.04% to 63.56. The combination of a strong equity rebound and a broadly stable currency suggests that the day’s move was primarily reflected through equity-market risk appetite rather than a major currency adjustment.
Australia Extends Recovery
The S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.92% to 8,789.30, extending its advance from September 29 when the index rose 0.34%. The Australian benchmark has therefore added more than 1.2% across the latest two sessions, bringing it closer to the 8,800 level.
The Australian Dollar Index moved in the opposite direction, slipping 0.49% to 69.86. The divergence between Australian equities and the currency highlights a session in which investors showed stronger appetite for local stocks despite continued pressure on the Australian dollar.
China and Hong Kong Move Higher
Chinese and Hong Kong equities also finished higher. The Hang Seng advanced 0.37% to 24,613.27, while the SSE Composite Index gained 0.31% to 3,842.19.
The moves followed mixed performances in the previous session and kept both benchmarks near important psychological levels. The Hang Seng remained above 24,500, while the SSE Composite held above 3,800, indicating continued stabilization despite relatively modest daily gains.
South Korea and India Lag
The regional advance was not universal. The KOSPI Composite Index declined 0.48% to 6,838.04, reversing part of the previous session’s 0.27% decline. The benchmark remained below 6,900, keeping the recent trading range in focus.
India’s S&P BSE SENSEX was essentially flat, slipping just 0.07% to 72,480.29. The limited move followed a 0.43% decline on September 29 and suggested that Indian equities remained in consolidation mode rather than participating fully in the broader regional rebound.
Outlook
The September 30 session leaves Asian markets entering the next trading period with a more constructive regional setup. Japan’s move above 66,000 is the most significant technical development, while the ASX 200 is approaching 8,800 and the Hang Seng is holding above 24,500. The SSE Composite remains above 3,800, while the KOSPI continues to trade below 6,900 and the Sensex remains near 72,500. With currency performance mixed, the sustainability of the equity rebound will remain an important focus as investors assess whether the latest gains represent a broader recovery or another short-term rotation in regional risk appetite.
