Asian Markets Recover as China and Hong Kong Lead Gains

Asian markets delivered a mixed performance on November 4, 2026, with strong advances in mainland China and Hong Kong supporting the regional session. South Korea and India also finished higher, while Japan and Australia recorded declines.

The SSE Composite Index led the listed equity benchmarks, rising 2.16% to 3,686.17. The index gained 78.07 points from its previous reported close of 3,608.10, reversing its 0.82% decline in the previous session.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced 1.67% to 23,919.50, adding 393.53 points from its previous reported level of 23,525.97. The increase brought the benchmark closer to the 24,000 threshold.

The gains in China and Hong Kong represented the strongest equity market performances in the region, contrasting with continued weakness in Japan and Australia.

South Korea and India Extend Their Recovery

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index increased 0.62% to 5,683.80, gaining 35.01 points from its previous close of 5,648.79. The advance followed the benchmark’s 3.59% decline in the previous reported session, indicating a partial recovery.

India’s S&P BSE SENSEX rose 0.43% to 77,246.77, adding 328.92 points from its previous reported level of 76,917.85. The index moved further above 77,000, extending its positive performance.

The advances in South Korea and India added to the broader strength across several Asian equity markets, although their gains were more moderate than those recorded in China and Hong Kong.

Japan and Australia Remain Under Pressure

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.42% to 62,188.63, declining 893.23 points from its previous reported close of 63,081.86. The decline extended the benchmark’s recent weakness and brought it closer to the 62,000 level.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.59% to 8,834.50, losing 52.30 points from its previous reported level of 8,886.80. The decline reversed its previous session’s 0.34% advance.

The contrasting movements in Japan and Australia highlighted the uneven distribution of gains across regional markets.

Currency and Private Equity Indicators

The APAC Private Equity index declined 0.43% to 6,878.60, while the Australian Dollar Currency Index fell 0.48% to 69.67.

The PHLX Yen recorded the largest percentage decline among the listed non-equity indicators, slipping 0.50% to 63.01. All three indicators finished lower despite gains across most of the region’s major equity benchmarks.

Moscow Stock Exchange Closed for Unity Day

Russia’s Moscow Stock Exchange was closed on November 4 for Unity Day. The holiday closure meant that no active trading session was recorded for the exchange in the supplied market data.

Outlook

The November 4 session highlighted renewed strength in Chinese and Hong Kong equities, alongside continued gains in South Korea and India. However, losses in Japan and Australia demonstrate that regional recovery remains uneven. Investors may monitor whether the SSE Composite can sustain its move toward 3,700, whether the Hang Seng can approach 24,000, and whether the Nikkei stabilizes following its latest decline. The performance of currency and private equity indicators will also provide additional context for assessing broader regional market conditions.
