Key Points
- China's SSE Composite Index led the major Asian equity markets with a 0.86% gain, bringing the benchmark to 3,986.30 and closer to the 4,000 level.
- South Korea also advanced, with the KOSPI rising 0.46% to 6,820.02, while Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia recorded modest declines.
- India posted the region's largest equity-market decline, with the S&P BSE Sensex falling 0.51% to 76,866.61 as the Australian dollar and Japanese yen also weakened.
Asian markets closed mixed on August 31, 2026, as investors began the final session of August with renewed buying interest in mainland Chinese and South Korean equities. The SSE Composite Index and KOSPI posted gains, while Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, and India finished lower. Currency markets also weakened, with both the Japanese Yen Index and Australian Dollar Index declining 0.42%.
China Moves Toward 4,000
China’s SSE Composite Index rose 0.86% to 3,986.30, recording the strongest gain among the major Asian equity benchmarks.
The advance brought the index within roughly 14 points of the psychologically important 4,000 threshold. A sustained move above that level could become an important signal for investor sentiment toward mainland Chinese equities as September approaches.
The latest gain also helped extend the recovery from the recent weakness seen across Chinese markets.
South Korea Extends Recovery
South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index gained 0.46% to 6,820.02, recovering further after Friday’s 1.79% decline.
The benchmark returned above the 6,800 level, although it remains below the 7,000 threshold that has become an important reference point during the recent recovery.
The modest advance suggests that buying interest has returned following the sharp volatility experienced by Korean equities during August.
Hong Kong, Japan and Australia Edge Lower
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index slipped 0.07% to 25,566.99, remaining comfortably above the 25,000 level despite the marginal decline.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.14% to 66,311.93, but continued to hold above 66,000.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.18% to 9,076.00, remaining above the 9,000 threshold despite the modest pullback.
The relatively small declines across all three markets indicate that selling pressure remained limited compared with the larger moves recorded earlier in August.
India Underperforms
India’s S&P BSE Sensex declined 0.51% to 76,866.61, recording the largest equity-market loss among the major Asian benchmarks tracked in Monday’s session.
The decline placed the Sensex below 77,000 and reversed part of Friday’s 0.43% gain.
The performance highlights continued divergence across Asian markets as investors balance regional opportunities with ongoing volatility.
Currency Markets Weaken
The Japanese Yen Index fell 0.42% to 62.46, while the Australian Dollar Index also declined 0.42% to 71.61.
The simultaneous weakness in both currencies contrasted with the stronger performance of mainland Chinese and South Korean equities.
Outlook
The key focus heading into September will be whether China’s SSE Composite Index can break above 4,000 and whether South Korea’s KOSPI can maintain its position above 6,800.
Japan’s ability to remain above 66,000, Australia’s position above 9,000, and Hong Kong’s hold above 25,000 will provide additional indicators of regional market stability. In India, investors will watch whether the Sensex can recover the 77,000 level following Monday’s decline.
Overall, Asia closed August with a mixed but relatively contained session. Strength in China and South Korea provided support for the region, while modest declines elsewhere reflected a more cautious approach as investors prepare for the new month and reassess the direction of regional markets.
