AMD is expanding its push into the next generation of artificial intelligence with the acquisition of World Labs in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The deal reflects a broader shift across the AI industry as semiconductor and technology companies move beyond large language models and pursue systems capable of understanding, simulating and interacting with the physical world.

AMD Expands Into Physical AI

World Labs, founded in 2024 by AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, focuses on developing “world models” capable of generating and analyzing interactive three-dimensional environments. Unlike large language models that rely primarily on text-based information, these models are designed to understand physical spaces, the movement of objects and how different elements interact with one another.

The technology could support applications across robotics, simulations, autonomous systems, design and other areas of physical AI. For AMD, the acquisition extends its position beyond supplying GPUs and processors into technologies and models that could influence the hardware requirements of the next generation of AI systems.

A Deal Connecting AI Hardware and Software

AMD and World Labs have already worked together on model training and inference optimization using AMD GPU processors. The acquisition turns that technological relationship into a broader strategic initiative, with the World Labs team joining AMD while continuing research and development focused on AI world models.

Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. Her role could strengthen the connection between advanced AI research and the development of the hardware, software and systems required to run increasingly sophisticated models.

AMD Broadens Its Competition With NVIDIA

The transaction comes as NVIDIA is also expanding beyond AI accelerators into technologies for robotics, simulations and physical AI systems. AMD continues to compete with NVIDIA’s substantial position in AI accelerators and its broader software ecosystem, making World Labs’ research capabilities and specialized talent strategically relevant as the physical AI market develops.

World Labs has raised approximately $1 billion to date, while the acquisition represents a substantial increase in the company’s valuation within a relatively short period. AMD expects the transaction to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Going forward, investors will monitor how AMD integrates the World Labs team and technology into its product portfolio, as well as the pace at which physical AI is adopted across robotics, simulation and autonomous systems. A key question will be whether the $8.2 billion investment can translate advanced research into commercial advantages across AMD’s hardware, software and next-generation AI platforms.
